I was very lucky. Spent years as something in the city (accountancy style) in the oil business but after having youngest followed by life changing illness I took time out and fell into school so to speak. At 50 I started a degree course and graduated 3 years later and work in Supporting learning at primary level. Wouldn't be a teacher for anything as I begrudge so much paperwork but working with kids is the best. On a bad day I drag myself into school only to be lifted by the kids.

Big (((((hugs))))) from me. There's nothing worse than being stuck in a job you hate....and I've had a few...........I used to work in the Wrangler jeans factory......was there for years and it was ok, then got moved to another factory doing a slightly different job and absolutley hated it...........ended up coming home in tears every night, so I just up and left......had loads of other factory jobs after that......even worked in a place that used to can food

I must have the best job, after years with two young children and watching ever penny and working stupid hours here and there doing shop work etc. At the age of 34 I then retrained as a pre school teacher and loved it, did it for two years.
Then my hubby landed himself a job here in Austria working for Red Bull, I am now a kept woman, have all the time to craft and swim. Don't have my own money to buy craft but hubby is a gem and I think if I had to go back to work I would never...

i think i'd like to be teaching craft, and i'm taking driving lessons at 42. i 'like' my job but after 10 years it's a bit boring, fairly secure, but not gotten anywhere near the next rung on the ladder though i have been asked often to train, it's just never actually happened, and i feel i am capable of so much more, and with pete's encouragment i will pass my test, (as it was him who suggested it when we got together) and do my utmost to find a more interesting...

You have my sympathy, stuck as you are between a rock and a hard place. A job you hate is a terrible thing but then you have bills etc. to pay you have to put up with a lot. Some days/weeks are worse than others, it may be possible to do something about your situation but you will have to check out all your options and think carefully before you act. There's no point cutting off your nose to spite your face - giving up work and facing money worries could be even more stressful. I hope you...

Sorry your down Izzy but if there is any chance you can do something about it, do it. I pushed through ill health to keep working part time to help our boys go to Uni and as the last was finishing I handed in the towel " 2 years ago.It has taken a while to get used to it and I have to watch the pennies but my hubbie is brill and I would not look back. I dont get stressed about anything and stress did not help my condition.Honestly if you can make cut backs the happiness is worth it....

I had a life defining moment in 2006 (at the ripe old age of 38) after 18 years working for HMRC ... won't bore you with the messy details.

I'm now my own boss and working from home with an online shop selling baby bits and bobs.

It's fabulous and I can highly recommend it ... although I would never have dared take such a radical leap of faith if I hadn't been backed in to a corner.

Funny how life works some times.

I wanted to be a hairdresser but mum wouldn't pay for me to taken and apprenticeship. If I had my time again I would have been an accountant.

Issy, sorry to hear you are having a tough time at work - that is not a good place to be and I hope things improve for you at work.

If I had my time again I would do something more pyhsical than office work. When I left school girls could not do 'trades' and I think I would quite like to have trained as a paper and decorator. When I was at school I fancied horticulture as a career and took all the right subjects but my careers officer was not keen on my choice and guided me...

I was a civil servant in the old DHSS before the girls were born, not the best job in view of the "customers" we dealt with. Had 13 years as mum/housewife and needed a job when youngest was 10 as OH faced redundancy, so started cleaning privately which fitted in with school. Now I only do 3 people two & half days a week, not a dream job but not stressful or difficult.
Looking back I'd have liked to work in a solicitor's office, I like boring office work.

Sorry to hear you are feeling sad Issy. I would say its never too late to do the things you want to do (unless you're 90 and want to be a Prima Ballerina!) and I am only now doing a job I love at 43. My parents wouldn't let me go to University, said I had to earn a wage and bring some money in. I was pushed into office work which I did for many years and hated. Then I did retail which was better but still not what I wanted. I'm teaching crafts twice a week now and I love it...

Being paid to stay out of work would be nice but, I would soon get bored with nothing to do. I have had enough.......I have decided I do not like my job anymore...I am suffering with stress and I am sitting here all alone again until 4.30pm.
I am waiting for the day when they make me redundant.....16 years is worth a payout I think. The job I do is getting too stressful for me to handle.
Although, I am trying to find something else. Its not easy around here. Jobs are hard to come by that are secure these days.
I have now got tears rolling down my cheeks just thinking...
