Unfortunately you don't have to be old to get shingles. I have amazed the doctors by having had shingles 3 times . Once at 16 on my stomach-still have scarring, again at 33 on my face, and the third time when I was 35 (after a hysterectom)-again on my face and forehead- just a wider path. My kids actually called me elephant woman because I had this huge swollen mass from my forehead down to each side of my nose. The second time was given medication to relieve the nerve pain, but it didnt...

Maggie,
It won't have been your grandchildren. You can't catch Shingles. You must have had chickenpox at some time. The chickenpox virus remains dormant in your body afterwards. When something triggers it again (stress, run down etc) it comes out then as Shingles.
You can however pass on the Chickenpox virus to others while you have Shingles because you are highly infectious, but you can't pass on Shingles.

The last person I knew that got them last year got a newish drug which if given soon enough, helps to reduce the time it takes to recover, which can be quite a while. Hope you get the best help going. Dont forget to rest. Ali x

Oh Lorrie that makes 2 of us my doctor has given me anti hystamin tablets and anti hystamin cream and honestly they work. I've got it down my right arm and it has affected my elbow I thought it was tennis elbow til the blisters appeared at the weekend. One of the grand children must have passed it to me as it is still doing the rounds at the schools.

Hi Lori I am so sorry you might have shingles its an awful vrius
When the Doc calls tomorrow he,ll fix you out as people have said Modern medication is superb for shingles
Chicken pox was rife in this area a few weeks ago my wee grandaughter who is 6mths had them and oh golly it knocked her for six and then had a nasty ear infection just last week......
My hubby had chicken pox when he was 28 and again he really was extremely ill with them so although its a nasty virius i...

When I had a really bad allergy I was prescribed Eurax cream which was an absolute miracle! This was years ago and I had forgotten what it was called but my friend has used it too and has just text me the name.
Not sure if you can use it for shingles but worth asking the pharmacist because it relieves the itching for hours at a time, bliss!

totally agree- was what I always advised my patients with shingles. Also, only wear natural fibres - silk, cotton etc against your skin.

My Mum has had shingles twice. First time on her scalp under her hair and again about 2 years ago on her lower body. As soon as we realised it might be shingles the second time, and that ALL of the blisters hadn't appeared (she had the tingling sensation that precedes them), I insisted at the GPs that they gave her some tablets to lessen the effect. It was a struggle to get them, but some blisters were not out. It did lessen the effect and prevented...

calamine lotion is the best to put on the blisters to make them stop feeling itchy and it is also cool to the skin. sorry to hear about your shingles, not nice to have but after a week or two, you will feel better.

I swear by aloe vera, or as my grand-daughter calls it - nanny's magic green jelly!!!!! It's what I used on her when she had chicken pox and on my mum when she had shingles.
The one I use is SBC purchased from QVC.

Nothing I can add, except I'm sorry you are feeling rough, what every one else has said is all that you can do, but the doctor will be able to give you something too, my doctor did when my daughter got it aged 5 and as the doctors did not know what it was, apart from a rash, she carried on going to school and gave the whole class chicken pox, I was not very popular for a while, oh dear

All good advice, but remember on the 'contagious' bit, you can only give someone chickenpox (if they have not had chickenpox before) NOT shingles. As shingles is something that only people who have had chickenpox can get - shingles is an infection of the nerve from the chickenpox virus which can be 'reactivated' by things like stress or prolonged illness. sorry to go on, but my Dad had it and a very good friend of mine had it 2 years ago, so you learn allsorts! I've had it too - painkillers for the nerve pain & anti-viral medication from the GP - the hospital told me to use vaseline on the blisters. It did work quite well and saved any scarring too from the scrathing. Don't forget you are contagious until the blisters have gone. It can be very painful - you have my sympathy. I only had it mildly too ut still get the nerve twinges even now - two years on.

I believe Zovirax helps but only if you use it as soon as you get the first symptoms. I hope you soon feel better. A colleague had them on her face and in her eye-most unpleasant.

Been feeling pretty miserable last few days,...achy fluey exhausted and had burny tingly skin round my tummy.....now I've got blisters ,which are burning like h**l...a friend said it might be shingles, so phoned the doctors for some advice,...yep they think its shingles too,...but doc is gonna come out tomorrow morning to make sure....thought you had to be older to get shingles , I'm only 40 (sumthin). anyway got calamine cream and lotion but wondered if...
