this was in an answer to a query on UKS and thought I'd share with you.
Open a new 'word' doc...
go to 'Word Art'.
Pick a style
type your word(s)
Highlight the box so corner handles show...
on your toolbar you should see a box that says 'AV' and has an arrow pointing left and right
hover your mouse over it ..should come up 'word art character spacing'
click on it
go to 'custom'
type in a number
press enter key
you should see your letters moving together...the more you reduce the more they will overlap..
have a play...might give some fun effects for your cardmaking or scrapping...
also try unchecking the 'Kern character pairs ' option....and have a play with that !

p.s. the 'A B B ' button 2 along lets you make the text horizontal should you wish!!
