Phew, just had a nasty experience. We have daughter's dog for four weeks while they are on their honeymoon in Thailand, only because they thought he would
lose too much weight, as he never settles, and is on the go all the time in kennels. As we have had dogs for over 30 years (none at the moment) we brought him
home after the wedding.. Now, to say he likes to run is understating it slightly. He is a German Shorthaired Pointer, and enjoys nothing more. We took him into
the fields behind the cottage, where he has been before, and he "quarters" looking for pheasants/partridges etc. Unfortunately, he gets so carried
away, he doesn't hear commands. This morning he took off in the wrong direction towards the main road, and just kept going, oblivious to our calls and even
the whistle, because he had found some partridge. He disappeared from sight, and the traffic was rushing along the road about half a mile away. I was beside
myself with worry, my husband was swearing and took off over the field to find him. I noticed some cars slowing down, and feared the worse. We couldn't see
him because of the height of the cereal crop. Another man walking a lurcher went to help, we all thought he had got onto the road. I had visions of a badly
injured dog, and a trip to the vet, not to mention explaining to my daughter.......... so I was much relieved to see this brown head bouncing back towards me
across the middle of the field. Once back he was under control, wondering what all the shouting was about. Hubby was not so pleased, can't tell you what he
called him. So for the rest of the stay, he will be having lead walks only....... might not be so lucky next time.
