O/T Festival of Remembrance

I was watching the Festival of Remembrance lastnight and had to stop crafting it was so good!
I heard a comment in a pub recently that surely it was time to forgive and forget! The person was soon gently put in his place by a young Soldier who was home after a stint serving in Iraq! I wish you could all have heard the round of applause the soldier got!
Tonights show was modern and heartwarming without losing the meaning of why we were there( either in person or like me at home watching!)
From WW1 to Iraq and every war/conflict in between was mentioned.
We cannot and must not ever forget those who paid such a high price for our freedom. We must continue to support those still fighting for freedom for all.
I know there are probably members on this forum here who have sons daughters husbands wives serving abroad and I salute you all!

We WILL Remember them!!!

I couldn't agree more, my brother did 9 years in the RAF, we were lucky he didn't get sent into a war zone but could quite easily have done. It's such a shame that some people think it's all about the World Wars and forget we have lots of people in the here and now fighting and tragically losing lives.

We must never forget them.

It always makes me fill up when I see the Chelsea Pensioners marching into the Hall...Those lovely old men who fought so hard for us...And the old man of 109...Bless him...Also, the young men of today, some of them only babies really, at least they seem so to me.
My thoughts go out to all who lost loved ones in any conflict...I, for one, will not forget them...They fought and lost there lives to give me my freedom and I salute them all.

This poem was on a laminated card in a local shop yesterday, I found it very moving. Just found it on the internet:

A Poem for Remembrance Day

"The inquisitive mind of a child"

poppy Why are they selling poppies, Mummy?
Selling poppies in town today.
The poppies, child, are flowers of love.
For the men who marched away.

But why have they chosen a poppy, Mummy?
Why not a beautiful rose?
Because my child, men fought and died
In the fields where the poppies grow.

But why are the poppies so red, Mummy?
Why are the poppies so red?
Red is the colour of blood, my child.
The blood that our soldiers shed.

poppy The heart of the poppy is black, Mummy.
Why does it have to be black?
Black, my child, is the symbol of grief.
For the men who never came back.

But why, Mummy are you crying so?
Your tears are giving you pain.
My tears are my fears for you my child.
For the world is forgetting again.

Very moving, and NO we must never forget, I will watch the Centotaph this morning and have my hanky ready for all those brave men and women who march past. God Bless all our servicemen and their families.

My sister (a former officer in Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps) is an Anglican lay reader and will taking the service in her local church this morning. She told me about a new national services memorial in Staffordshire which has the names of 16 000 servicemen and woman who have died while on active service, not in the two great wars but all the other conflicts that tend to get forgotten - remember Aden, Kenya, Cyprus, Korea, as well as Bosnia, Northern Ireland, the Falklands, Afghanistan, Iraq....... On the same site bis the National Memorial Arboretum.

I have been thinking more than usual about Remembrance Day and the sacrifices made on behalf of us by those in the services now and in the past. Perhaps it is because I am getting older, and starting to think about my own mortality which has focused my mind. My thoughts have inspired me to create some art, and as I created each piece I thought both of those that have lost their lives and those who returned scarred both physically and mentally. I am sure most would join me in wishing that wars and conflict could cease for ever, whilst there is need...there will always be those willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the rest of us.
We will remember them...

I also made a short video set to the music 'Brothers in Arms' as a memorial which I have placed on my profile should anyone wish to go and spend an extra few moments thinking about those brave people.
One last thing, I am not sure if this will sound odd...but whilst I have of course thought of those who died in service of our country, I have also tried to remember all those who fought and died...no matter what country they came from.
A life is a life, and every life lost in war is a tragedy for humanity.
