what is the best way to do a cross stitch, is it from corner to corner to make the cross then go on to the next one, or is it diagonal to the length of the
stitches you need to do then back again or is it down to personal prefference ?

Which ever way you go it all must be in the same direction as it sticks out like a sore thumb

no hard n fast rules, however you want to do it, but its right to make sure you always go in the same direction so all your bottom stitches all go the same way
n all your top ones all face the same way, gives very neat finish, if your not sure try doing em any way you like n see the results.

i`m doing one, it`s my first, and the stitches are 1mm in size. I am doing 1 cross at a time and next to eachother, but no perticular order. Someone said my
stitches are really neat. I thought i would ask to see if there really WAS a perticular way to do it. I did see a website on how to do it, which is not how i
do it. So i thought i would see what everyone else thought and how they do it. Thank you for your comment.

your welcome ellie, its great hobby, i've done it for years but not lately.
when you've had more practice you will soon know how you feel most comforable in technique. chell |

I always start at the middle and work out. That is how the patterns say.

I normally count out from the middle and start at the top left corner of the design (probably because I'm left handed).
If there's a block with one colour, I would work half the stitches in one direction (/), then go back along that row and do the other half stitches (\). If you are doing one X at a time you'll use more floss and some companies can be a bit tight with their floss, so I try to use as little as I can. Good Luck. Would love to see the finished design Donna X |

I'm left handed as well Donna. To start fold the material in half and half again and that will show the middle to start at. the patterns always have
little markers in the margins at the middle to work out the middle of the pattern. If anyone wants me to explain more ez me and I will try to help.

ooh yeah, i started in the middle. If you start at the edge you might not have enough fabric when you get to the other edge or it may look odd. I was talking
about doing the stitches in general.

The stitches should all be the same. I go up the top right, down bottom left up top left down bottom right

One tip is to work it so that the 'down' stitches go into the holes with existing thread in them. If you do an 'up' stitch through the hole
with existing thread, it tends to bring the thread up with it and looks less neat. Make sure you don't use too long a thread, about 12 -14inches, this
means that the thread is less worn and doesn't become untwisted so easily.
Also, if the cross stitch is for an article that will get some wear and tear, such as a cushion or chair seat, use a cross stitch that covers more of the wrong side as well, so you get double thickness work. It uses more thread of course, but means that the finished article is more durable. This doesn't matter on pictures. Other than that, it's how you feel most comfortable. HTH Judy C |
