I always thought I'd be terrified of snakes but when I was in the US we had them in the park I was living in. They were not of the deadly venomous variety
but you wouldn't have particularly wanted to be bitten by one. I found them fascinating and shy. They really do try to keep out of your way, unfortunately
their camouflage is so good its hard not to step on them by accident. They are really beautiful and all part of life's rich tapestry. I possibly
wouldn't have felt that way if they had been able to kill me. I won't go to Australia even though I'd love to because of all the spiders and snakes
that are deadly over there. My first day at Wolf Park they had a guy who brought all sorts of animals for us to stroke and there was an enormous python, it
took 5 people standing in a row to hold it. It was wonderful to stroke but I wouldn't have fancied holding the head end!

David Attenborough showed one of those snakes in yesterdays programme "Life in Cold Blood". I have watched this serie as he is so interested in all
those weird and wonderful animals, although last night not even David could make me warm towards snakes however fascinating they may be. Birgy

I just have to stand up for Australia. I have met quite a few people when I was in the UK who were scared to come to Oz because of the snakes and spiders. In
my 31 years of life I have seen exactly 4 snakes in the wild, 2 copperheads, 1 king brown and 1 tree python. The 2 copperheads were without their heads, as dad
had been digging in the garden, finding them under stones and decided he valued his life more than the protected snakes. The king brown I saw the other day,
and the python was only 30cm long and was harmless. I have seen lots of spiders, but have only seen 1 deadly one, which was pointed out by my father to show us
what a red-back spider looked like. By the way, it is tiny. Most of the spiders I have seen have been daddy long-legs (small and harmless), or huntsmen (look
big and scary, but are harmless) In fact I love having a hunstman on my bedroom wall as they eat mosquitos. I have never been bitten by a snake or spider.
Please dont let the fact that we have the deadliest creatures in the world here put you off coming. I've never seen a shark in the wild, never stood on a
stone fish, never seen a wild platypus (much less been stung), never been bitten by a dingo, never been pecked by an emu, never been attacked by a kangaroo,
never been clawed by a koala. And I grew up in the country surrounded by some of these creature. The main thing is if you leave them alone, they will leave you
alone.
Saying that, I still have to say I HATE snakes. I've never liked them, but it doesn't mean I'm scared to live here. So come over if you get the chance. Our animals are dangerous because they have to be to live in an environment like ours. Personally I'd be more worried about the bush fires, flash floods, extreme electrical storms, cyclones, and rips at the beach. We have a harsh environment, but it is so beautiful. Come and visit. Cat I know that what you are saying is true but I was put off by someone telling me about a nest of red back spiders in their kitchen and also my sister's
experiences of snakes (king cobras and others) when she lived in Malaysia. I agree with you that snakes try to stay away from humans but I'm also scared
(terrified) of big spiders and have seen huntsmen on tv. I would have a fit if I saw one! We had spiders in the US that made you really ill if they bit you but
they were small so although I got bitten (and was ill) I could handle it because they were small. I just go to pieces if I see a big spider although I would
never hurt them. I hope one day I can pluck up the courage to come to Oz as everyone I know who has been has had a fab time. I don't want to put anyone off
going either!
