If you are having to buy between 6-8 prescriptions each month, then you might be better getting one of those pre-payment certificates. I think people on Incapacity Benefit would only qualify for free prescriptions on the grounds of low income. To find out if you are entitled to that, you would need to fill a form in. I think the form is called HPC1. You might be able to get this from your doctor's surgery, post office, library or Jobcentre Plus office. All the best xx |

Ive never understood that about Incapacity..... You still have to pay full price even though you are unable to work. Seems daft to me.

That is one benefit to being an oap ( there aren't many!) you get free prescriptions. I have asthma and have five different items a month just for that. I
count myself lucky though as it could be a lot worse. My OH has a carrier bag full of his things, he has heart condition and diabetis.

I now pay for a pre-payment card as I have three different drugs daily. This is done by Direct Debit at just under £10 per month over 10 months of the year. I
couldn't afford it all in one go though. I don't know why there is not more publicity given to pre-payment. I think that if a doctor is prescribing
medicines that will have to be taken long term they should HAVE to issue a leaflet about payment help at the same time as the prescription.
A lot of GPs have been instructed by the Primary Care Trusts to issue only monthly prescriptions to "avoid" overprescribing and wastage. I can't see that it makes much difference. However, what I have done, is to register at local pharmacy and they collect my repeat prescriptions for me (takes one phone call to surgery and one to pharmacy each month and all done). If necessary the pharmacy will deliver to my door with no extra charge! The reason why free prescriptions are not automatically issued to those on Incapacity Benefit is that you can get this benefit if you have other income or savings (you get it because you are ill and have paid minimum stamp contributions). Anyone having trouble paying should to to their local pharmacy and ask about a form for claiming due to low income. Again NOT enough information is available. I think all surgeries should be obliged to have HUGE multilingual poster about help paying prescription charges displayed in a prominent position! Off my soap box now. |

My surgery will only issue a month at a time now so that is more expense at I used to have 2 months on one prescription. I get really annoyed at the costs.

I'm not sure how accurate this is but our doctor told me they are no longer allowed to issue prescriptions for more than two months at a time because of
the increasing number of people who are going abroad to live without advising the NHS they are no longer resident in the UK. Dr. Y. also told me the government
is considering allowing Virgin and Tesco to assume responsibility for running "failing" practices, presumably because they know all about
cost-cutting and profit making!
I take seven different tablets daily and can't imagine how I'd pay for the drugs if pre-payment certificates should be discontinued. Marion

Must admit that with how much it all costs I get really irate that you can't get a refund if the prescription doesn't work! With anything else that
you buy if it doesn't do the job that it is susposed to do then you are legally entitled to your money back under trade descriptions!! Think that you
should only pay for the original prescription and if that medication doesn't work and you have to try something else then that should be for free. Many
years ago I was ill and off work for 3 months which obviously meant a severe drop in our income as I had to go on sickness benefit and I had 6 different
prescriptions for my problem, none of which worked! The doctor eventually told me that there wasn't really anything that would really cure my condition
and that it would probably just eventually clear up by itself (which it did). So why the hell did I have to pay out six times for useless medication?
Ggrrr, it really made me angry at the time
