Gatefold cards - A question |
Lead | |
|
I am wondering if anyone else has the same problem as I do when making a gatefold card, I use a board and usually an A4 card but when I fold the ends over
there is a slight gap, it's not a large gap but it is noticable if you are using a dark card with a white reverse. I can still use the card but it does
annoy me!

I get that when I use the M&F Board, but if I measure on my paper trimmer and score using the channel, that does seem to sort it out.
Good luck Donna X |

Me too Jenny, I've got several boards and without exception they all do it and some of the gaps are bigger than others. Really annoying!

I've used many different boards but the one I find most accurate is the Crafters Companion board and I use the large glitter ball tool to do the scoring.
That usually works for me!

I have that problem with my board but I've also noticed that sometimes when I score A4 card for an A5 card the front and back don't meet exactly. I
turn it so the short bit is at the back or trim it off, it's only a millimetre but it does annoy me because it spoils the finished card.
I think I'll invest in a scoring blade for my trimmer and try that (as Donna does) instead. If anyone finds an answer to this problem I'd like to hear it. Jan |

I use the Eazi Score board to fold all my cards, and they all come out perfectly. I had the same problem with other boards before I bought this board. I love
using this board now. Available from Joanna, of course!!

laa laa the words acat and pigeons come to mind
I don't use anybody's board - except Glenda's Groovy to make watefalls to make a gatefold, I measure and score with a bone folder and a ruler but better still I cheat - buy the double fold blank cards from craft creations (like three A5 panels) and chop 75mm or so off each end - voila gatefold but wer all have different ways - and I realise mine is the most badly behaved way on the thread lol |

I hope it's permissable for me to post this Joanna...
The edges of quality shop bought cards do not meet. The back is approx 1-2mm shorter than the front to enable easier opening. When designing our M&F
board we aimed to provide card crafters with a precise tool to attain the most professional of finishes, hence the gap or the extra bit you get when using our
board.

I've had problems with boards and came to the conclusion it was the card - for any board to be accurate the card has to be the perfect size and have got a
sample of mine to check, I found all so called A4 sheets were minutely different!
I stick to measuring. Jxx |

Well the board I use is the eazi score, and I am quite happy about the lead edge as it does make the card easier to open. Joanna I have never thought about
using the three panel card and cutting bits off but it does seem a bit of a waste.

There is a simple solution.
I remember Glenda on a show once, I think. She said it depends on the thickness of your card. The thicker card seems to take up more to fold? She, as far as I remember, said to trim very slightly your A4 card first. I just folded an A4 sheet of card on the Eazi board as a gatefold. Got a little gap. Noted the size of gap and on the next A4 card, I trimmed that little amount first, did a gatefold again, and....NO GAP! Your side
'gates' are the same size as normal, but you have shortened what is left at the back!
You can do this on a normal A4 half fold too, but I like the leading edge at the front. Makes it easier opening the card. Sorry if it wasn't you Glenda.

Thank you Elaine, I wish I had that sort of brain!

I like Joanna's idea of trimming a threefold card because you then end up with matching card (bits you cut off) to use as mats - something I do quite often
when stamping or using peel offs.

Sometimes this happens and other times not, I use the blue board and had to make 100 Wedding invitations using bazill in this style. I have always put it down
to whether or not the card was a true A4 or an american cut. When i made the invitations I took a fraction of each sheet before folding and had no problems.

when i do an A4 in half i use the lead edge at the back n line it, usually with mirri, a gatefold would probably have a topper over the edge or afancy liner to
be seen through.
otherwise i manipulate the edge before i use my bone folder to make it meet in the middle. so i work round it or bend it my will, lol. chell x |

I cheat by scoring the first part and folding it in, then lining up the other side by hand and folding it lightly by hand, then running a bone folder down the
crease. That way there is never a white line and the edges meet every time. Just an idea, but it works for me. I always get a gap if I use the score boards for
both sides. Janet

ELAINE LUCY wrote: So if you use the same board as I do Elaine, and you get a gap, but I don't, it has to be the card then? My A4 card must be very fractionally shorter
than yours. Because I have never, ever trimmed anything off the A4 sheets. |

Well I never usually make gatefold cards, but tried it this morning after seeing this question. I remembered Glenda? saying something once and tried it. I took
off just the thinnest edge on my guillotine.
My desk is now littered with gatefolded cardstock , of various
thicknesses! Only one has a gap,........ the only sheet I
didn't trim. All of the others line up with no gap, perfectly with sheets that were trimmed. So perhaps it's down to scoring and how we fold? I
don't know. I always fold, so that the scored 'valley' line is the outside of the fold.
Strange, but if yours works ok, that's fine. Has anyone else, who
was getting a gap, tried trimming slightly? If so did it make a difference? I am quite interested now!
Guess what my next few cards are going to have to be now? Gatefold!
I'm not wasting them!
love elaine xx aka Perplexed of stoke
PS Paula I even tried thick KB cardstock after trimming, perfect. |

I'm now going to be wary of folding gatefolds, I'm bound to find a gap the next time I make one!!

I just do the same as Chell I put a piece of matching Mirri card down the centre so it becomes part of the card and not a "mistake"

I've tried it with a bit trimmed off and perfect, thanks for trying Elaine and look forward to seeing some gatefold cards on the forum soon.
