Posts: 4523 (08/04/2008 00:19:17) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : None ....Our Schools are on two weeks half term hols and while hubby was home, We fancied going to the Creetown Gem Rock museum in Galloway, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it was like..............it's about a 2 1/2 hour drive from where we live, just fancied doing something a wee bitty different, but can't be too girlie about it.....especially with the 'fellas' in tow Quite fancied the look of this place, it looks really intersting. Any info would be greatly appreciated Jackie x

It's a lovely part of the country. Don't know what the Gem Museum will be like, but the vicinity itself is beautiful. Part of the scenes from the movie The Wicker Man were filmed in the Creetown Hotel (or is it called the Creetown Arms? Can't remember now) - and the burning of the wicker wotsit was done up behind where I lived at the time. Threave Gardens are where Christopher Lee 'resided' in the movie and do indeed have glorious palm trees and exotic plants because of the mild weather. Queen Victoria is reputed to have said the area between Newton Stewart (a bit further on than Creetown) and Dumfries was the most beautiful place she'd seen. It certainly was when I lived there and I guess it hasn't changed much. Hope you have a great time. Susan

Susan, you make the place sound sooooo beautiful, some very interesting facts there, you really are a mine of information I just hope the weather will be ok, sun is shining at the moment but it looks freeezing out there, anyway, as I said, I just fancied doing something different, it's getting 'the teenager' to do the same that's the hard part, think I'll cheat though, I just won't tell him where we're going, and then it will be too late . It's a fascinating place, but when you first arrive it looks like a tiny cottage. Not only do they have all the various gems etc, they also have a room called the Professors study where they show a video and, if you visit during the week you can sometimes see the staff polishing and making jewellery from various gemstones(they are for sale, of course). Also, if you are interested, there is a large shop in Castle Douglas with lots of gems and fossils. We are going again this month and will no doubt visit the shop again as it is also a CRAFT SHOP Regards Sylvia PS. The Museum also has a very pleasant cafeteria
