That is really incompetent on the teacher's part, but surely the head of the department should have been aware of what was going on? Also the exam board
should have been informed and allowances made? Hope someone was hauled over the coals for that one!

well he's back from school and they had another three hours of maths today to help get this sorted and apparently an apology from their teacher. Personally
I blame the head of maths, when my daughter did her coursework it had to be submitted to the head of maths at planning stage for approval that they were going
in the right direction. It seems to me that it is her job and why she gets a higher wage. Apparently eevery maths teacher available was there today and my sons
English teacher came in during his free period to give them moral support and to give them some help to make sure their grammer etc was as good as it could be
given that they were so rushed

My daughter is in Year 11 and her maths teacher actually lost the course work and she had to redo it, and when she was in Year 10 her art final piece went
missing and she had to spend most of her summer hoidays reproducing an A2 canvas. It never turned up.

That brings back memories - in 1968 when I sat down in the examination room to take my O level English Literature exam we found out that we had been given a
totally different list of books, etc. to read from the ones on the papers - none of the questions made sense, obviously. Back in those days though, they just
failed us and made us sit it again the next year - I managed to pass that time!!!! lol

Its disgusting the state of the education system. One day my GD showed me her jotter and a word which she had spelt incorrectly was corrected - with yet
another mis-spelling ....... what chance to the kids have eh! I'm not saying we should bring back the cane and the belt but unfortunately there is no
longer any deterrent as discipline is unheard of and there is no respect for teachers (although some of them don't deserve it and it has to be earned,
it's not a 'right' depending on status).
My GD is now at school here and it's a completely different style altogether - more like 'old fashioned' 3Rs along with spelling. There are only 8 in her class so each child gets much more attention. Rant over! xx |

I presume your son is doing his Statistics GCSE this summer as an early entry GCSE. It is quite late for them to submit work if it was only due in
last Monday - as all themarks need to be with the exam board by next Friday for this summer's exam session.
Personally (as a Head of Maths!) I would be asking why the work had not been ready to hand in earlier..... it should also have been internally moderated by the school too before the grades are sent off!

alarm bells should have rung with me earlier I guess, the reason the coursework was going in last Monday was that it was the year tens first day back at school
after they had been off the previous seven school days for work experience. On the wednesday night that they finished for work experience every child in the
maths class received a telephone call from their maths teacher to say he hadnt realised that they were off on work experience and he wanted the coursework in
the first day back. What I dont understand though is that in other subjects , my sons taking ,parents receive a letter about up coming dates for modules, exams
coursework , if it happens in some of the departments why not all.

That really is very bad, I do feel for your son and all the others in the class, so much work and for nothing. I do feel they should have been given more time
under the circumstances.
Sue G, a similar thing happened to my daughter around the same age as your child, she had a word crossed out in her work and an incorrect spelling put in its place, along with a sarcastic comment. On parents evening the following week I challenged the teacher who insisted her spelling was correct, I then demanded she produce a dictionary, which proved my 7 year old daughter was the one who could spell, and not her. To say I was angry was an understatement. Christine I do hope your son manages to pass his exams, its stress and extra work he and his classmates don't need right now. Sue |
