I too, thought it was raddling to identify the preggie (he hopes) sheep for the farmer. Round here, some also have numbers painted onto their sides in
different colours, which I presume identifies who owns which sheep. Janet

My son in law is a shepherd with a tiny flock (only a part time hobby) and the girls above are absolutely right!!!! He is now the proud owner of 39 little
lambs running around the field - it's a lovely sight and I am going down with my camera at the weekend.

Depends on the time of year to help with management - mainly as above to identify if and which ewes have been friendly with which ram so you can be sure who is
doing their job properly (if one ram's colour never comes up he's off to the butcher!) but also, once the lambs are born you can tell if traits belong
to particular rams.
At other times of year a bright blob of colour can identify a sheep through binoculars at a distance if you need to follow up treatment for sore feet or whatever without gathering them all in. We also use it at scanning time (yes, just like human pregnancy) to group singles, twins or triplets so they get appropriate rations. Where farms have hundreds or even thousands of acres of hill ground, each will have his own high vis mark - like green shoulder, blue bum etc and that helps identify strays at a distance. |

You will see that newborn lambs have numbers on their sides to match the number on the ewe's side, so that the shepherd can make sure that the lambs are
being mothered. My son-in-law has just lambed approx 2,500 lambs during April.

Well, I've just learnt something new. I always thought it was to identify which farmer the sheep belonged to.
I'm not sure I'll ever be able to look a 'marked' sheep in the eye again
