It won't have been your grandchildren. You can't catch Shingles. You must have had chickenpox at some time. The chickenpox virus remains dormant in your body afterwards. When something triggers it again (stress, run down etc) it comes out then as Shingles.
You can however pass on the Chickenpox virus to others while you have Shingles because you are highly infectious, but you can't pass on Shingles.

You have to get the medication very early on to be effective, like with coldsores.
