. When I was four years old I decided I wanted a black doll but I wanted a boy
not the usual black bride doll which was popular at the time. My mother and father searched the shops and I got my much wanted black boy doll. He was
dressed in his denim dungarees, red and white striped collarless shirt and had a straw hat. He also was a walkie talkie. I still have him 55 years on and he
sits in my craft room watching me make my cards. He was played with all the time and was and still is, much loved. I took him up north to Grantown on Spey
where there was a shop that valued dolls and made them better if they were the worse for wear. I got a cetificate saying he was worth £250 and he got a new
outfit and got a new eye that had fallen out. That was about 15 years ago so maybe he is worth more now. I still have his original clothes which adds to his
value. We were burgled a few years ago and the first thing I checked was that they hadn't taken Sambo and thank God they hadn't. He is quite an old
man now and he doesnt say "Mama" when he walks but he still turns his head from side to side when you hold his hand and take him for his walk. I
just love him to bits.
