I am a member - have been for quite a few years. I have made a lot of good friends, and we have formed a spin off craft group that meets every week
. We have a variety of different speakers (some good, some not!), organise a
'Produce Show' every year and have just held a concert in aid of our local hospital. Last year I went on a holiday to the W.I. college, Denman, and
did a fabric decoupage course. Members support and help each other, and any members who are old or ill are helped with shopping, travel to hospital etc.
Altogether I wouldn't be without my W.I. friends .

The W.I. is actually not a religious group at all - some members may be, as in any other organisation, but that is all - why we sing Jerusalem I don't know
- our particular group don't sing it. Truly, anyone of any or no belief is welcome
. I can only speak for my own W.I. and the other groups we meet at various
events, but please don't be put off by the idea we are religious - go along and try it - you may well be surprised.

I've been a member for about 4 years now. My particular WI isn't very active, and it took a while for me to feel accepted but I made sure I volunteered
for as much as possible (outings, the county federation meetings, making tea) and got my face known! Every WI is different and there may be several in your
area that you could visit to see which appeals the most - you can have dual membership of a couple if you wish. As for a 'religious' element, I think
it is actually forbidden in the national constitution; we do have a carol service in church at Christmas, but the wording is always carefully chosen.....I
can't think right now just what it is called but it isn't a 'service', and the readings are definitely secular. And anyway, attendance is
optional!

I'm a member and it's a great way to get to know people and you can join in as much or as little as you want. We don't sing Jerusalem! I've
heard many very interesting talks ( and some not so).Every group is different and speakers often say ours is not quite like any other they know! so I guess it
depends on what your own group is like - go along and find out. Ours has a market stall where members can sell things and I have sold quite a few cards this
way.

My mum was a member of the WI for years then a few years ago , her group felt the WI wasn't for them, they converted to the 'Country Women', a
Yorkshire based 'thing', the main head quarters don't take half the subs the WI took, and theres a bit more lea way in what you can and can't
do.

Hello Janet. I started going to the WI last November as a guest and really enjoy it and now I've joined as a member. We have different speakers and a
competition each month, go out for meals and outings and I have made a lot of new friends.
Just go and give it a try. Barbara x |
