Sad really isnt it
Found something called Jersey Kale (of the cabbage family) and the leaves are at the top of the stalk - which can grow to SIX FOOT tall. You can cut the
stalks, dry them out and make walking sticks with them,

My veg plot is nearly ready for planting! Got my seed tatties all ready, the onion set, spring onions. Lettuce, tomatoes, waiting on broccolli. and as for
my wee orchard! I have some FEIJOA tree seeds on order (fell in love with that when my son sent me a picture of the one in his garden) oooh and some Chinese
Gooseberrys (the wee golden orangey coloured ones that look as if they are wrapped in tissue paper)
Sad really isnt it

We have runner beens creeping up poles, radishes, lettice and cue cumbers coming on quite nicely. French beans which have a pretty purpley blue flower. All my
herbs are now in the garden and am about to start more off. Oh dont you just love this time of year.

When was a bairn I begged my mammy and daddy to get an apple tree for the garden. My godparents (who lived next door had one) but they refused. There was one
here when we moved in (Paul 'pruned' it) but its now got loads of new leaves on it. I was given a plum tree and we bought a pear tree. We have loads of
strawberries and some brambles , but best of all some rhubarb. When the sheds are built I am getting a wee greenhouse to grow the more exotic things .
Have asked my son to send over some packets of native Aussie seeds so I can have something a wee bit different in the front garden lol . Now we have just shoved stuff in the front this year to fill the spaces, but next year - well! We are going to do the St George and St Andrews crosses there - think it will be very eyecatching so stay tuned!!!!!! |

Oh She,
you really made me long back to our own garden in Sweden. That's one thing I miss staying over here, my own veg plot, the last two years nobody grown anything in our garden back home - but my parents have harvested loads of asparagus so next year my husbands says that none except him are gone have some. I've already decided that the first thing I will do coming back home in August is to put radish and rocket seed in the ground so we have some fresh veg this year from our own plot. Then later we do have the plums, pears and loads of apples - it's gone be a fest on fruit all autumn. Karin xx |

So much nicer to grow your own. We have cabbage, brussels, beans, peas, tomatoes and potatoes at the moment and they are doing really well this year - I also
have strawberries, blueberries and hope my apple tree will give me some apples this year as well.

We only have a very small garden but we have a prolific grape vine and get loads of grapes every year ... if we remember to pick them before the birds get
them. We used to have a blueberry bush too but the birds always beat us to it then kindly deposited the waste onto my washing!

She you need to be careful with getting seeds from Oz............. you certainly aren't allowed to take any plants, seeds, etc INTO Oz and I'm fairly
sure that it works this way too.
Good luck with the veggie plot though! My friend has an allotment and the veg is so nice! C xx |

Very exciting indeed She Wray! We have been growing our own veg for years and there is nothing like picking the fresh produce you have spent
love and care on! Do keep us updated. We have a big wild rabbit population here (we live on a farm) and they broke into two of our veg patches last week
(runner beans and brussels) and had a real feast. They have also eaten my roses this year which they have not done in the past! Good job I like bunnies but I
wish they would just eat our grass and weeds!

Paul wont let me buy some fertilised eggs - I thought it would be nice to have a couple of chickens and a wee duck lol. Mind you - with some of our residents
on the estate they would have them in the pot with the veg!
Carol - we have been checking about the seeds from Aus - if they are sealed in foil packs and in the original packaging we are ok - cant wait now! Funny you should say that Tina - was looking at the organic site and thought - ooooh - our homegrown stuff is that - blimey I am going to save a fortune - hmmm - now what can I do with that saved money? I know - buy some craft stuff lol As for pests - well we have zillions of blinky snails - looking at a humane way to get rid off them (my first choice is chucking them over into next doors garden) and blinky blimey cats. Going to order some Zoo Poo to deter them. At the moment I tell them to go away (but not as politely) I am sorely tempted to see if the council would allow me to keep a goat as a pet - it could cut the grass and supply milk - oh yes and get rid of unwanted callers at the door. |

Don't mean to be a killjoy, but, don't forget the slugs and snails. We have had to buy some more
runner beans, cos they have no leaves now, I set a tray of marigolds, planted some out, all gone, yet the ones I still have in the tray they haven't touched.! Just poured two pints of beer into two trays and put by the beans hope I have caught some in the morning. Jen |

If you have snails and slugs, save your coffee grounds and put them around the plants, the pests do not like them - any nearby coffee shop will be glad to save
it for you if you ask them nicely - for those of you who don't make ground coffee.
