I know how you are feeling Wendy. I had an MRI a good few years ago, and there was a nurse present and she kept talking to me throughout the whole thing. It
made a huge difference

I've had several including whole spine (took about an hour I think -not sure, but none of those I've had lasted more than 75 minutes and I went to
sleep!). I'd have your if I could as I have no problem with them.
Can you have some valium beforehand? Worth asking your GP. Or take an ipod loaded with your favourite music to wear under the earphone things they put on you. Hope they find the cause of your pain and can sort it - then the scan will be worth it!! Hugs Janet |

Wendy, I have had about six over the years and I have an anwful problem with closed spaces. The last three I had when I also had problems swallowing and
therefore had difficulty lying flat. Each time I was given something to calm me down. I think it helped a bit but I just had to concentrate on the fact that if
I didn't let them finish I wouldn't know what was wrong with me and couldn't come home. If you do get to the stage where you want it to stop, just
say to yourself leave it a few more minutes, when that is up, say just another few minutes etc. The tests are done in stages so you do get a break in between
so make the most of it trying to deep breathe as much as you can. I was always given earplugs as the noise is one thing that gets to patients but some have
music playing in the background but if you can take your own at least you can focus on that. My thoughts will be with you.

Good luck with it. I agree about taking some favourite music with you and drifting off to a nice place.
When I had one they gave me a buzzer so that I could alert them if I was in a state - was OK till I opened my eyes and realised how close the top of the 'tunnel' was. So to avoid the top of the tunnel syndrome an eye mask sounds a really good idea - maybe sprinkle it with some lavender or other calming perfume. Liz |

Thankfully it's not something I've experienced(touch wood), good advice here though from others that have had one. Best wishes that everything goes
well for you.

hi Wendy you can be put to sleep, and have the M.R.I.done, as i am also claustrophobic, and the last 2 i had done they put me to sleep, you will have to arrange
it beforehand with your Doctor, and this would also stop you panack attacks and worring about it.I hope this helps

Oh Wendy I am sure you will be fine. As Joanna says, think of your wedding day, or maybe think yourself on a lovely calm remote beach somewhere and listen to
the lapping waves. Works for me
Best of luck! |

Hi Wendy,
When I had my first one I was really ill so can't really remember that much about it apart from I threw up on the technician when they sat me up after the scan (oops!!!!). I had a cage on my head to keep it still as it was scanning my brain which was about almost touching my nose. Not nice. The second time I was fully aware what was going on and I ended up looking like Princess Leia with two 'toilet seat' kind of things on the side of my head. they reckoned they were trying out a new technique for keeping my head still, but I think they were taking the mick, I just kept thinking about them killing themselves laughing in the booth!!! then the palyed music ito the scanner for me. It was brilliant. I was in for over an hour and it flew by. Only problem was i kept tapping my feet and every now and then I heard the technician telling me to stay still!!! Give them a ring and ask if they can play music into the scanner. It made the time go so quickly. they might let you take tour favourite CD in. Hope it goes OK for you and its not to stressful!! {{{BIG HUGS}}} Love Jill x |

Hope it goes well for you Wendy, have you decided to try the music? Sorry I can't go in your place cos I've had four MRI scans and I think that's
quite sufficient LOL! The first one was of my brain and I nearly asked them to get me out as I wasn't expecting the cage thing or horrible noise but I was
perfectly calm with the subsequent ones, good luck

I actually felt it to be very relaxing. Somehow the way I was lying and the coolness gave a relief from the pains in my head that none of the medication did.
The worse part was when the doctor said I had a perfectly normal brain and my husband ( who had also seen the screen ) replied that it was normal but absolutely tiny. Hugs and best wishes and hope all is well |

I've had 2 MRI scans of about half an hour each, where my head was inside the machine. I was dreading the first one as I'm quite claustrophobic &
likely to panic.
The first time I closed my eyes before being slid into the machine which helped a lot. I kept them closed all the way through & imagined a lovely beach with palm trees etc. That saw me through even though I was shocked by how much noise the thing makes. The operators also talk to you every so often to make sure you're OK & you can speak to them if things start to get too much, so you're not cut off from everyone in there even though they leave the room. The 2nd time I did the same visualisation technique but this time the hospital (different one) provided music through a headset which made it even better. It drowned out some of the noise which I'd found so off putting. I'd take your own with you just in case they don't provide this as in my first experience. Neither occcasion turned out to be as bad as I had thought. I went in on my own both times & was fine. 2nd times I even opened my eyes for a short while but decided it was much better with them shut. Try not to worry about it as I'm sure you'll be OK when it actually comes to it. It's always amazing what we can put up with when we have to. Good luck to you & pratice viualising your relaxing place a few times before you go. Love Helen S x |
