I went to the dentist last night for my 6 month check up ouch!!! I have been having a small intemittent problem with a couple of teeth, anyways the outcome of last nights visit, I need one large filling, one root canal filling, and a crown, plus a clean and polish. Apart from taking the xrays last night, he has done nothing but so far I have parted with £44.60 and will have to part with another £200.00 once all the treatment is finished. My first lot of treatment is on the 25th June at 2:30. Sat here thinking now what do I pay all that National Insurance for if my dental treatment supposedly on the NHS is so expensive. I am not looking forward to this as I am a very big whimp where dentists are concerned, and I just know that my gag reflex is going to kick in big time, I just cant cope with all the instruments in my mouth. Oooh panick panick panick. Would any one like to go and have this done for me please? Penny

My final appointment is for 6 extractions for which I have sedation. My dentist can't do this so I have to have 2 dentist on hand which means my appointments have to be when they are both available. Appointment made for 3 June, 6 weeks after original examination, cancelled, one dentist out sick, next appointment for 9 July, dentist announced last Friday that he was taking the whole of July as holiday, another appointment now for 14 July with alternative dentist. I'm begining to wonder if I will ever get them done. As my teeth have broken away, it doesn't look very nice so I am shy about talking.(maybe not a bad thing)This is also NHS, as you say, what are the NI payments for?

I was surprised that your treatments were costing quite so much, as I thought that there was a maximum charge for any one course of treatment under the NHS system, so I looked it up and found this link, which might help. http://www.whatprice.co.uk/dentist/nhs-prices.html If your treatment is prolonged then the best advice I can give is do not sign off the NHS form until you are happy that all the work that you want done is completed, then it is only seen as one course of treatment. I once had to have a root canal done which took me to the maximum cost, so I asked to have 2 teeth capped as well (didn't cost any more as it was all classed as one treatment.

I hope your ongoing dental treatment is sorted soon, sdixon sounds like your having a bigger nightmare than I am. thanks glitter fairy I will check out the link tomorrow sometime when I can read and digest what it says, and as you say I wont sign anything till I am happy that everything is satisfactory and complete. Have had 3 fillings (1 very big) 1 extraction to come and also am having a part set of top and bottom dentures and the total cost of this will be £177. Sandra xx

Cant get an NHS dentist round here for love nor money so have no choice but to go private, my bf recently spent well over £500 for cleaning and one filling. Best of luck, Nic x
