Had electricity bill in yesterday, also year end, £109.87 in credit and YES you've guessed it........wont re-emburse under £110.00!! Came off phone last night shaking I was that annoyed. Told them not to bother collecting from bank a/c for next 4 months as I'll stop any money going to them been told I cann't do that as we'd be in 'breech of contract' but they can keep my money and get interest on it! UUGGGGG!!! Starting to boil over again. Christine xxx

I dislike British Gas intensely. We have been inour house for over 12 years now and have never had gas connected and yet they bother us continuously wanting to check that we have no connections, that we have no connected meter, that we have no appliances we are secretly using from this secretly connected service!

Posts: 180 (27/06/2008 08:34:46) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Hiya Christine, you should contact energy watch, they were very helpful when we contacted them concerning our pre-pay meter. we are with eon and when I asked to have the meter taken out they said they could only take it out if there was not a debt on the meter (we were in credit on the meter) so I gave her the meter reading and she said that we were 350.00 in debt It's a pre-pay meter. It turned out our meter had stopped working and had not been picking up the tariff changes since 2004 after contacting energy watch and threatening to take them to court for getting us into debt they said we only had to pay back 85.00 It turns out they can only collect debt for a limited amount of time. but if i hadn't pursued it we would have paid it or even worse if it had been an elderly person they would have paid it without query So I would definatly contact someone it doesn't sound right that they can keep your money. http://www.energywatch.org.uk/ Lynn

Apparently if the amount in credit is around your monthly figure, they do not re-imburse you. Depending on how near it is to 2 months or above in credit, they do re-imburse you. We are currently trying to get our electricity company to come out and check our meter as we think we have a fault, our payments are through the roof. How can 2 people use £100.00 a month in electricity, and still be in debt at the end of the year. They will not come out and check it as they say the daily readings, which I had to collect for a week, are averaging out for each day. Tried to explain to the stupid woman if its faulty thats very possible that each day is very alike. I think we will contact energy watch, see if they can help us. They were demanding £120.00 a month as they said it was illegal for them to knowingly put us into debt by collecting a lower amount each month. Its crazy, what about people who pay quarterly, they are in 'debt' each quarter then until the bill is paid, if you follow their logic. Sue

Posts: 180 (27/06/2008 09:51:33) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I have to say sue it does seem high we are on a pre-pay meter and NOW with our new meter we average 15.00 a week depending on how much washing i do in the week (the washing machine gulps the electric) didn't realise until we had new meter in as our old one wasn't charging enough before. That electric is for a 3 bedroom house with 5 people( 2 adults and 3 MESSY children), we also have 3 electric air purifiers running 24/7 I would definitely contact energy-watch. Hope you both get it sorted out soon. Like I said previously to start with they demanded we pay the 350.00 it wasn't until we refused and contacted energy watch and threatened legal action for getting us into debt that they accepted responsibility and wrote off most of the debt.(It turns out that they can only collect debt for a limited time period) Plus we only have to pay the 85.00 back at 1.00 a week. It really does make me angry that they try to intimidate people especially vulnerable people Had it been an elderly couple after they had had a heart attack or stroke from the shock they would not question it and have paid it. It may be a bit cheaper to pay DD monthly but I hear of so many people who are paying too much and always way in credit, would be better off having the money in your bank for 3 months earning a bit of interest rather than your suppliers. Our electric, (3 bedroom house) last bill a couple of weeks ago was £115 for the quarter.

I only found out when I checked my Bank Statement. I did the same with United Utilities after a four year battle over a faulty water meter which I won game set and match. The same with BT, who refused to refund me £13.59 and insisted on my DD remaining at £21pcm , despite me only having line rental costing £11 pcm off them If you owed them £105, they would cut you off and take you to court pretty smartish. You should have the same right The trouble with these companies is that they still think that they are monopolies especially BG. Vote with your feet. I am with Atlantic Electric and Gas. I think they are based in Perth. Their Customer Service is second to none and I am quite happy to pay them DD. For the payments I cancelled, I made sure that the money not paid out went straight into a high interest savings account via a Standing Order so that the money is there when the quarterly bill comes in, plus a little interest.

OK for them to keep my overpaid money for a year but as soon as I owed them money they were clamouring for it and insisted it was paid immediately. If you're not tied into a contract with BG for a certain time period just move suppliers then they have to give you any overpaid amounts. I'm all electric and I'm now with Atlantic. They're great and I think they're reasonably priced as well. Customer service is very good TJ

Posts: 15608 (27/06/2008 12:26:48) Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	well I obviously hadn't realised just how low below freezing this last month has been (not) we had a gas bill for £5,900 or thereabouts - I think the entire village would be hard pressed to use that much gas in 4 weeks in the summer - but no - we have to take the long way round and spend hours and pounds yelling at them before they will listen ... do you have a lot of customers with only one child at home and the central heating switched off that have a £5k gas bill I asked???? grrrrr - but we have got it sorted after many many hours of "debate" !

They just put it into our account without telling us. A WORD OF WARNING THOUGH, we pay our D/D monthly, and hubby got a gas bill online and moaned as the monthly payment was going up, I having a memory like an elephant as hubby keeps telling me said it doesnt seem that long ago that it went up, so we looked at the online back statements and discovered it had only gone up 6 months previous. Hubby rang them and we got a very nice man on the phone, he said although we were in credit the computer estimates that on previous use we will need to pay more to cover the year. Hubby explained it is now going into Summer, so we wont be using much gas, plus we will have 2 weeks holiday with no gas use what so ever, so if we are in credit after the winter surely we will be in more credit after the Summer so no need to increase our payment. The nice man agreed and even reduced the monthly payment by a couple of pounds. We asked how come they were re assesing the paymeny after 6 months and he said it is a new thing so people are constantly assessed and dont get hit with a huge pay rise after a year. Personally I think it is an excuse to get more money out of customers. So the WARNING is keep checking your bills every 6 months in case they try to up your monthly payment without telling you. The electric from BG did the same but we didn't get a nice man and they wouldn't budge, the price went up Eli xxx

Surely their own intelligence should have told them there was something wrong for a bill for a private house to come out as £5K. Oh sorry, I forgot they don't seem to have any intelligence or common sense it's the computers fault.

I thought having to ring this morning over them trying to overcharge us by £150 was bad enough... think I got off quite lightly Eli, that happened to us, they upped our monthly payments without much warning. It is tempting to just let DDs take care of themselves I know, but like most people I spend a long time checking everything through all the time now. Shouldn't have to do it, but that's modern computer systems and impersonal corporations for us... still... £5000! Lavender XX

Posts: 857 (27/06/2008 14:56:40) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Alan was laughing when he saw your post Joanna, when he first retired ( before going back to work again lol) he toyed with the idea of being a meter reader, he said it sounds easy just punching numbers into a device, then he had second thoughts, he is slightly dyslexic and said he could get the numbers in the wrong order, and he would be sending bills much larger than Joannas so seeing the post made him realise he could have been right.
