I thought that all you ladies (and gents of course) not only might like this but are sure to have stories of your own to add. Many many moons ago I used to
travel around the country (and then around France) exhibiting my pressed flower gifts. I well knew that awful feeling when you set up what you know is a lovely
stand, in fact the BEST stand in the room, and then wait for the customers to come pouring through the door and clear you out in the first hour . Gradually the
truth dawns - it isn't going to happen and your shoulders go down as you listen to all the comments people make. YOU have become invisible. I did several
shows run by a delightful lady called Christine Pankhurst who ran really well organised shows but not always in the right places. One weekend, we exhibitors
got to know each other really weWe were suddenly enjoying ourselvesll as we too frequently popped into the refreshment room for a cheering up cup of tea. We
exchanged stories, comments that our - I was going to say customers, but it was more 'passers-by' - had made. Suddenly we were enjoying ourselves
until dear Christine came in to see where all her exhibitors had disappeared to. I hasten to add we had left "look outs in case we were needed, but we
seldom were. We decided at the end of the day to give a decision on the best comment to have been overheard. There were some corkers. We gave "top
prize" or would have if we could have afforded it, to a couple of young hippy type ladies (I told you it was a long time ago). They had noticed to elderly
ladies, head together oohing and aahing at the clothes on show on this particular stand. The two girls made simple dresses (think of Laura Ashley style) with
cotton material they had coloured with natural dyes (of course) and on top of the plain material they had block printed lovely designs so most of the dresses
were one-offs. The ladies apparently approved of what they were seeing and one was eventually heard to say to the other "Its amazing what you can do with
potatoes isn't it?" ............I could write a book. And so could many of you so lets herar your stories.
