OH has recently had an arthroscopy on his shoulder. The surgeon is apparently one of the top London guys - however, the op clearly hasn't worked and the surgeon has said he will most likely have to have another operation to shorten a tendon. In addition, OH had a steroid injection in it last Friday and the surgeon said it was fine for him to go off to a Fire Brigade R&R type place (down near Sassie!) for physio, fitness, etc. They have told him he should have waited two weeks after the injection before going there. He has been there since Sunday, the phsio isn't doing anything to help and he is in as much pain as he was before. He is supposed to be there two weeks but is likely to come home on Monday as they don't think they can help him. This is the second time he has had quite a major op and it hasn't worked properly and has had to be re-done (not by the same surgeon)..... So how much trust do you place in your Doctor/Consultant/Surgeon? C xx

I then fell and broke my wrist, which was set in the wrong positiion and had to have an operation to put a metal plate in, to reposition it. Then I had an arthrodesis, operation on my foot, which had to be redone within ten months because the screws came loose. So, the answer to your question Carol, is 'not a lot'.I am due to have my other hip replaced, but will pass on that for as long as I can!!! Ann x

Steroid injections can be very painful for a few days after - I know my husband was in a lot of pain with them, so I suppose in your husbands case they have made a big mistake, I think a trip to the surgery to have a go is in order and I would not blame you. Aidan was misdiagnosed ... okay she can be forgiven for that as Vasculitis is not easy to diagnose. She also misdiagnosed me. My stomach swelled massively, she said it was IBS, it got so bad I could not bend and was in a lot of pain ... she told me to join a slimming club! Finally Aidan had a right go at her and got me a private scan which showed I had a massive (it turned out to be 30lb) ovarian cyst which was cancerous. So no, I do not trust my doctor!

Many years ago my own GP prescribed valium for me (I was 19) as I was I suppose a bit anxious and having palpitations.......... he never once said anything about using it short term or whatever and me being very naive at the time and never having heard of the drug, assumed it was something I had to take - a "normal" medicine. He gave me repeat prescriptions for years, very often without even seeing me. It wasn't until I changed GPs when I moved house years later that I found out I didn't need them at all................... well and truly hooked on the by then of course - the new GP was furious with him but great with me and allowed me to wean myself off but it took me a few more years before I was off them altogether! That same GP told my sister in law's father that he had arthritis - no tests, no nothing - turned out the poor man had bone cancer. By the time they found out it was too late. I realise of course that doctors and nurses are only human and mistakes will happen of course - but the things on this thread so far seem to me to be very basic things that just shouldn't happen! C xx

Posts: 3064 (05/07/2008 00:08:50) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	having seen a lot of doctors/consultants in this last 10 months i would say my confidence in them is very mixed when Scott was having a transfusion on tuesday a doctor came in that hadnt seen him since last sept in A&E, i thought i recognised him, this was because i overheard him talking about me saying i was a bad mother because Scott had been being sick on and off for 3 weeks, this i reminded him of funny how he didnt come back in the room again, it was very unprofessional of him to do this, funny isnt it that i have a tendancy to be there when this happens, but i will also say that i have come across some very good nhs staff

I demanded to see our own Doctor, I really had to "have a go" and it was a pity I hadn't done it before, because by the time we saw him, Colin was classed as terminally ill, and nothing could be done. It's one of those "if only" cases, and I shall never know, if he would have still been here, if we'd seen our own Doctor in the first place. The Doctor we had been seeing, very suddenly retired with "ill health" after I put a complaint in, and we never heard of him again. I think once upon a time a Doctor was treated like a God, and their word was law, but there have been so many things in the papers etc, that to me now, they're just doing a job, like anyone else. You have to put your faith in them, and hope for the best. xx

You have to put your faith in them, and hope for the best. xx too true Jacqui they are just doing a job, doctors are only human and no one whoever they are is right all the time it was an out of hours GP who first diagnosed Scott, he could quite easily not have examined him and just given him calpol for teething

I don't think much of the new one. My cholesterol is high and the sum total of his advice was eat less cheese cut it down to twice a week. I will be getting a second opinion on this and other things. He's totally lacking in interpersonal skills, doesn't listen and has no time for anyone. However, I trust him totally as he is always more than willing to refer people for a specialist opinion. Since my heart attack I receive a reminder every year for various blood tests etc. and he always follows everything up. Each time I've had a breast lump I've had an immediate referral to the breast unit. I have seen numerous friends receiving poor treatment from their GP's but luckily despite mine being like a robot, I have to say he does do what is required for physical well-being. Lynn x

Posts: 1504 (05/07/2008 02:22:42) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	yes carol, thank you. the majority do a fanastic job and even make miracles happen. there are doctors and doctors. i think we put a lot of faith in our GP's but in the end they have to refer us to other doctors and sometimes one really has to push them into making a referral. a friend of mine, her son had a lump in his testicle and the doctor said it was nothing to worry about. he went back a few weeks later and said it was getting bigger and wanted to see a hospital doctor. the GP said it was not needed. in the end, the young man pointed out to the doctor that they have a poster outside saying any lumps in the testicles must be reported asap to a doctor as it could be cancer. reluctantly the GP sent him to the hospital and it was found to be cancerous. i am happy to say he had his op and his chemo and he is fine. well to that one GP there will another 1000 GP's sending the patients to the right hospital doctor. my father was passing blood in his urine and i ask him to go to the doctor. i feared it was cancer because of his other symptoms. the GP told him he was ok and nothing to worry about. i was young and trusted the GP, although i had a gut feeling he was wrong. i kept making my dad go back to the GP and after many visits he saw another one who sent him to the hospital and my dad was diagnosis with cancer and just lived for another 2 years. i was going to make a complaint about the GP but i learned he was retiring in a few months so i left it. for those 2 doctors, they are thousands who one can trust completely. i have meet and worked with a great many doctors, senior ones and junior ones over the years and i can tell you each one of them i would trust completely. i have never meet a 'bad' doctor in my nursing career working in the hospital. love juneb off me soapbox now and off to bed i think.....................................

We have both good and indifferent GP's in our surgery. The only female doctor is Indian and has a big 'chip on her shoulder', so much so that the first time I saw her she accused me of being 'racist' to which I told her because my parents had fostered children, I had been brought up with all kinds of colours and creeds and the only person in the room being racist was HER!! and eventually suggested she went back to where she came from........medical school! Needless to say I've go on my notes not to put me in any of her time slots. I appreciate that they do get things wrong from time to time but like all other walks of life have a 'time limit' to diagnose something and have to keep inside the 'funds' allowed. Christine xxx

Posts: 2674 (05/07/2008 07:17:56) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	i trust my GP he listens, refers, tests etc, my problem is with his current apointment system, you have to ring at 8.30am for an app that day, by the time you get through around 8.50am all the app for the day have gone!!! i very nearly always have to ask them to check with the doctor how i should treat the sympoms i have-which very nearly always ends with him requesting to see me anyway. i am surprised that this many ppl are willing to put their lives in the hands of ppl they just dont trust, are there no alternative practices in the area, in most of these cases i would change my GP, i changed my GP 20 years ago when the one i saw had been telling me my 6week old baby had colic, he was my second born so i was fairly confident it wasn't, after 3 visits to him with the same thing i waited until after hours n rang emergancy doctor who had him admitted to hospital where he spent 6 weeks further having scans to determine deformed kidneys, it was treated in the end as a water infection. my story began when i went to him in the first place for a pregnancy confirmation, he told me i wasn't, but i knew i was (i'm 5ft 2" n was wearing the jeans of my 6ft husband as i couldn't get mine on!) he was adamant i wasn't but sent me to have a scan to 'prove who was right' (his words to me) well i went n the lady doing the scan asked why i was there so i told her 'well, your right, 11 weeks by the scans'. so really after being ignored at the beginning of his little life and nearly losing him shortly after he was born i'm afraid i did exercise my right to have a GP of my choosing looking after the wel being of me n my family, and it was at the time when you had to go n see the said GP to ask him to 'sign you off' his panel, so when he asked i just told him straight n said if he refused then i would be taking it to the medical board-failing to diagnose a pregnancy-how good does that look!!! the GP i went to after that was very good, not very friendly, but good at his job. i think sometimes too it takes a fresh pair of eyes to help see things clearly. sorry to have rattled on, but i do think we should all have the best we can, n sometimes ppl just dont want the hassle of change, but if you dont do it for yourself do it for your family, take care, chell x

I do trust him. He treated me very well indeed when I was struggling with terrible periods and had me admitted to hospital for treatment as soon as possible. I have also had very good treatment in hospital, though I do feel some of the nurses are lacking in common sense (e.g. when I was in hospital to have my arm operated on, I was hooked up to a drip, but had no food until another patient went to get me breakfast!). Peter also had good treatment when he had to go to hospital recently, and the staff in our local community hospital, which he had to attend every day for a month, were lovely. So on the whole I think we are quite fortunate here.

Both hubbies dad and mine died TOO early from neglect by their gp. Both had been visiting their gp for back pain and stomach pain for about 12 to 18mths and both were treated with paracetamol and indegestion tablets. When in the last stages of terminal cancer my dad was put on a morphine driver and died that very day. They found out that he had cancer ONE WEEK before he died. For me that was neglect and if he had had an xray 18mths prior he would have lived. And i can go on and on about the mess he surgeons have got me in, but that is another story and is just too long to put on here. My sympathies go to all who have suffered Luv Jen

Posts: 4180 (05/07/2008 08:24:50) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I trust most of the gp's in our surgery but would choose just one or two if I can, they are very thorough and always insist you have the regular blood checks etc., I was quite young to start with arthritis but when my knee suddenly started swelling for no reason the doctor sent me for an xray to rule it out, trouble is it confirmed it. My doc draws diagrams so you can understand what it is he is tryingt o tell you, that's quite funny but does help. When I had an eptopic pregnancy my then gp was worse than useless but when my OH called an ambulance the treatment I had was fantastic so all in all, yes I trust my gp and wouldn't want to move from that surgery. I also have close dealings with a continence nurse, physio, a counsellor (with an open appointment system so I don't need to be referred by my GP) and of course my wonderful MS Nurses. I trust them all implicitly. My GP has admitted on many occasions that he is not an expert on MS, but gives me his full support for whatever I need and I has even said that if I can't get an appointment with him get the receptionists to get him to ring me back and he'll see me. I know it sounds very strange but I was ver lucky at diagnosis. The GP I saw sent me to the hospital who in turn sent me to the RVI in Newcastle (an MS centre). The first doctor I saw was Phil. He was a registrar than, but now he is a consultant neurologist and took me with him onto his clinic list, so I have known him since I first walked into the hospital. I was very stressed a couple of years ago when I was fighting to get my retirement from work and Phil had to write a letter for me supporting my retirement. He, obviously, had to be completely sure that it was the best thing for me. We had 'words' and I ended up sobbing my heart out. As I left the clinic I apologised and he got a hold of my hand and said 'we've known each other too long to hold grudges'. Couldn't ask for more. My MS nurses are the same. Two of them worked on the ward I was on when I first went into the RVI and they looked after me. We're friends now and I can ring them whenever I need to. I know I'm incredibly lucky. Some poor people with MS only have access to an MS nurse one half day and month. I have mobile numbers for 3 nurses who I can ring whenever I need to, even if I just need to chat and get something off my chest. Feel like I'm bragging, but I'm not. I'm just lucky. Love Jill x

Posts: 872 (05/07/2008 08:45:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Not a great lot of trust it has taken them 8 months and still counting to get to the source of my chronic cough etc. Aintibotic course no 17 is now in full swing yes 17 courses (only a 2 week break during the whole 8 months) Because of not being treated quickly enough I developed bronchial pneumonia and chronic asthma. I have been waiting to have a CT scan for a couple of months to confirm diagnosis of Bronchiectasis. When confirmed I will be getting daily physio to help clear my lungs and will need constant medication throught the winter to prevent really bad chest infections. It is a long story which I wont go into but if my cough etc in early December 07 had been treated or managed better I would not now have an illness which will probably stay with me for the foresable future. Doctors at the moment are just a bit too fond of writing prescriptions I feel. Sorry for my little rant...

He only retired early because of all the new government rules etc that was being implemented and he did not agree with. His surgery was amalgamated with the local medical centre where there are numerous doctors who never know who you are. Fortunately I manage to see the same doctor each time and he is very nice. My mum is in her late eighties and a few years ago had a fall and hurt her ankle the doctors from the same medical centre insisted it was her back that she had hurt not her ankle. She never received any physio or x-rays and now she walks with a walking stick because her ankle was damaged but they can do nothing for her now. This is one of many errors so do I trust doctors.........no. Lorraine
