DEBATE speed cameras your thoughts? |

|
I have no problem with speed cameras if they were there just for motorist (and pedestrian) safety, but they are not. They are usually put at the bottom of
hills, or speed limits are changed for no reason along roads and they are added. It is purely to bring in revenue, which even then you would not mind so much
but when people loose their licences because of them, purely because of stealth on their part it is just disgusting!

i have no problem with them, anything to help slow drivers down to the speed limit.
i'll leave it at that as my soapbox on these issues is huge, lol. chell x |

Drive me nuts for the reasons you mention Tina - that said, if people stuck to speed limits less revenue would be made and the upkeep of them might become too
expensive.
Here's my funny story about speed cameras - a few years ago driving through a cloudburst to visit my Nan, I said to my hubby - "Oh, did you see that lightening?". His reply? "You've just been snapped by a speed camera Darling!" He was dead right and I took my fine and points in good spirit. Donna X |

Well, there's one outside my house Tina, and my house isn't at the bottom of a hill. Nor has the speed limit changed. I live on a 4 lane main road, and
although it is well and repeatedly marked as 30mph, hardly anyone travels at that speed, well, only when they go past the camera, of course, once past they
speed up.
When there used to be two policemen with a suitcase full of equipment to check for speeding motorists, they only ever booked drivers for going over 40, because the drivers always said it looked like a 40mph stretch of road. That was in the days of motorists going to court as a result of being caught speeding. Paula x |

We had them recently in our little village,,Did they work? not a chance now we have what I class as vigilantes standing on the side of the road with speed
guns, and they dont work either .When I walk my dog I take my life in my hands crossing the zebra crossing, even the police have only just missed me so I dont
know what the answer is,,,lol love sue xxxx

I find cruise control a great way of dealing with speed cameras - especially on the motorways where all of sudden you have to drive at 50MPH even in the early
hours of the morning - slap it in cruise control and then you do not have to worry about breaking the speed limit even though the urge is to put your foot down
because there is no traffic on the road at those times of day

Biggest waste of local councils money……. The village down from us Combinteighnhead has installed a couple of those signs that flash at you if you are driving
faster then 30MPH - not cameras just a warning to slow down.
Sadly these particular signs are on a stretch of Country Lane where it would be IMPOSSIBLE to do 30MPH - I have tried as a game to make the sign come on but not happening on that stretch of road That was Biggest waste of money in this case - was not referring to in general

When they are at the bottom of hills etc, it's a bit daft as it's very hard sometimes to be at the correct speed although i make a point of not going
over the speed limit. But, i dont think people should know where they are, that makes them pointless in my opinion as people will slow down not to get caught
and then speed up again. In my opinion if you are speeding then you should get done for it.
On the by-pass here they have speed cameras every so often for about 20 miles so that people have to stick to the limit as it works out your average over the 20 miles when passing each camera. But the ones here on the streets are useless as unless they are digital theres no point in having them. The tape gets put in on a Friday night and an hour later it's run out due to fire engines passing them and using it all up, so for th next week it doesn't work. The answer is, don't speed! If you have probs going down a hill, keep foot on brake! |

Total waste of time and just a moneymaking scheme. Half the cameras don't even have film in them and most drivers know where they are, slow down, then
roar off into the distance again. The cameras are set only to detect those who go 5/10 mph over the speed limit for the particular stretch of road they are on.

i wish they would put them in our village as we have a reasonably new speed limit of 40 mph which hardly any are sticking too..mostly well over 80mph, and when
the speed police are there with the guns then the traffic can seee them and they slow down.

Biggest waste of time ever. If you drive a route regularly you know where they are and people slow down for the camera then speed up again. If you're new
to the area just watch the brake lights going on, in the middle of a stretch of road for no reason and you'll be warned about the camers even if you miss
the signs. They would do more good in London if they put cameras on traffic lights to stop people jumping the lights, or using filter lanes to cut up queues of
traffic as these cause accidents and slow down the flow of traffic.
If they actually used the revenue raised to repair the roads and improve the buses it wouldn't be so bad but they don't. Jan |

I have mixed feelings on them (there are places where they are really needed) but on the whole I think it's just another way of getting money out of the
motorist. The police should be catching real criminals. How about all the drivers who are driving without tax, insurance or even licences and there are plenty
of them as my husband found out to this expense when hit by a driver without any of these. Chrissie x

There is a road near us, long stretch of dual carriageway, used to be 50 mph, then overnight the speed was changed to 40 and cameras put in. Now bear in mind
this is not a residential bit, no reason to change the speed limit. To top this, they make some parts of it 30 now (just adding tiny signs) for no reason at
all, the road and surrounding area hasn't changed, it is simply to catch people out, doing a speed that was there and they have changed for no reason. This
is pure money making, nothing whatsoever to do with safety.

Um sorry can't really come down on either side of this debate...............cos we don't have any here in Shetland:). There is supposed to be a
portable one, but I have yet to hear of anyone being caught by it.

Going to buck the trend here - I am for them 100%.................... and anything else which makes people think and slow down, even if it is just for the
length of road covered by the cameras.
Most of you know that I deal with insurance claims and have seen more than my fair share of photos of bodies in cars.......... so many accidents are due to speed - or would at least not be so bad in terms of damage or injury if the speeds were lower at the time of the collision. I am not saying I always drive within the speed limits myself - I would be lying - but as I say, anything that keeps the speeds down is fine by me. C xx |

I wish we had one near our place. It is almost 2 miles of straight road where the limit is 60, but I'm sure people go well over that pretty well all the
time. It is also wooded both sides and more than one motorist has been killed or seriously injured by hitting the deer that regularly cross over.
I know that some cameras are placed in daft places but on the whole I'm for them. I just wish they'd put the speed limit underneath on signs warning that there are cameras about. In some places the limit changes several times in just a few miles and it's very easy to forget just what you are supposed to be doing near the cameras!! I once read that the speed limit should be painted on the road at regular intervals and if this wasn't practical, I think some way of reminding drivers of the limit on a regular basis would be helpful and perhaps cause people to think about the speed they are doing. I am in favour of speed cameras. I don't always agree with the arbitrary speed limits but I try to keep to them.....I don't find it easy in open
countryside and was caught speeding about 4 years ago, having come off a dual carriageway and doing 69 in a 60 limit. I'm more ashamed of being caught
doing 34 in a 30 limit but that time I was offered a day's course on'driver education' instead of prosecution and I found it very worthwhile. I
think the signs that light up and say 'Slow down' are brilliant and do make drivers aware of their speed. I will admit that I speed on motorways but
rarely over 80.
My only concern is that watching the speedo constantly, with the fear of being caught, can be a dangerous distraction from observing the road ahead and nearer hazards. |
