Posts: 2680 (05/07/2008 09:23:47) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	We have a very good GP at the mopment,where Colin used to live they kept telling him his neck problems were down to the bad migrains!!! grrr so it took about 8 yrs untill he registered here in WSM and now something being done for him...well for his thumb shoulder and hands..the neck??? well they are waiting for him to have the ops this month on thumb and elbow,then will see how he is!!! he has just spent the last 3 days in bed in sheer agony in his neck!! .........but thats not to do with our GP thats it down to the surgeons at hospital in Bristol So ask me again after the 17th of this month if i trust them................. Sorry if i sound angry but i am soo worried about seeing him in soo much pain Wendy xx

When my darling dad had excruciating back pain (he was on the floor in agony) we knew something bad was wrong with him. We called an ambulance out 5 times in the same week and each time they took him to a different hospital and all they said was that he had osteoporosis in his back (we knew they were talking rubbish). We rowed and rowed with the doctors and ranted and raved at them (I was going like a mad woman) because I knew he didn't have this. Anyway, to cut a long story short, finally one of the hospitals admitted him. After 3 days in hospital he went paralysed and they transferred him to another hospital where he had a scan and they found a tumour on his spinal cord. They removed the tumour, but 3 days later it had all grown back. 4 weeks later my darling dad passed away on christmas day. So to say I don't trust doctors is an understatement. I know they couldn't have cured my dad but the fact that none of the doctors believed how ill he was was so demoralising for my dad (and us). But they think they know best. They must realise that we know our families better then they do and if someone in our family is in so much pain they should at least listen to us. Sorry to go on such a lot but this makes me feel so angry and you can't do anything about it. We put complaints in to the hospitals concerned and have several meetings with doctors and other suited people but they all stick together and you just get wound up all over again and get nowhere. My Ortho surgeon is a complete honey having done 2 total hip replacements on me. Donna X

Sent her home same day. Next day she collapsed they had perforated her bowel. She has ended up with septicaemia and one of the new superbugs. She then developed peritonitus and a collapsed lung. They at one time suggested that all the family be contacted just in case. One final blow they have just found out that she broke her arm when she collapsed but nobody had noticed until yesterday. Thankfully she is now on the mend. Hospitals, Doctors and Nurses do a wonderful job but just now and again it all goes horribly wrong.

Posts: 1175 (05/07/2008 14:47:02) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I am fortunate in having a very good GP and also a fantastic consultant Neurosurgeon, I have my consultant's mobile number so that I can contact her anytime if I have a problem with my spinal implant. My GP fought with the local PCT for the money to have my spinal implant surgery done 3 years ago. She admits that she knows very little about the implant I have but goes out of her way to find out about it, we share any information which we find individually and although I don't trouble her often she will phone me to check on my progress. I know that I am very lucky but I think that you have to sometimes be quite firm about what you expect from your GP. Two years ago we went to visit my Dad (150 miles from us), he had a chronic condition, but when I spoke to him every week he didn't complain about it. I was appalled when we saw the condition he was in. His GP had been visiting regularly and he had nurses going in twice a day, but he couldn't even get out of his chair by himself. When I rang the out of hours service the doctor I spoke to was very unhelpful and quite rude when I said Dad needed to be in hospital. We drove Dad to the service rather than wait for them to come out, the same doctor met us and said 'you want your Dad admitted then', mind you when he examined Dad he was in a ward within 5 min. Dad died just two hours later from multiple organ failure. If his GP or the nurses had done something sooner he would have been in hospital being cared for properly not suffering at home alone!! I am not saying that Dad would have lived but he would have been comfortable instead of struggling at home. Kate x

Posts: 611 (05/07/2008 15:24:12) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	One of the GPs on our practice I wouldn't go to again - she failed miserably with my ovarian cancer diagnosis (told me my rugby ball sized mass was very good abdominal muscle tone) and was incredibly flippant when I saw her just after the op and diagnosis - I always ask who I am seeing now - the rest of them are fine. And the consultants both for the op and my chemo have been great. My niece is a doctor - and I would trust her implicitly - she is a very good diagnostician (or did I make that word up) and has diagnosed things the consultant she was working for missed. She's also quite 'humble' - when she insisted my step-mum went to the out of hours surgery last year she told Van not to say what she did for a job - until the chap had diagnosed Van's problem himself - she didn't want to influence him in any way. She's specialising in anaesthetics - which meant she needed to know what had happened when I had a bad reaction to the anaesthetic last year

I understand some people haven't got that option but if your not happy with the service do something about it, there are complaints procedures you can follow. As for the NHS good docs, bad docs, good nurses ,bad nurses, just like every other profession in the world!!!!! Clair

Posts: 43 (05/07/2008 16:19:40) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	My husband collapsed at work a few years ago and the doctor at the A & E near where he works diagnosed epilepsy which the consultant at Addenbrookes immediately dismissed. My husband in the meantime developed a swelling in his testicle and our GP referred him straight to A & E where the very young night doctor diagnosed an infection. When the situation did not improve our GP arranged an emergency scan. It immediately became apparent my husband had testicular cancer. From that point on the treatment my husband received was very good and he has made a full recovery. I think that you just have to stick to your guns if you think something is wrong don't assume that the medical profession is right and query things. In their defence medicine is not a precise science many illnesses have similar symptons although I appreciate that misdiagnosis can lead to tragic consequences. Amanda

As to the point of making a complaint or changing your GP. In our area there's a shortage of GP's and it's hard to get on a new list and I've heard of people being removed from lists for complaining. In a group practice you do have a chance to see another doctor but it's been custom and practice to stay with the same doctor during the treatment period for that particular illness/condition. I sometimes think that when there is a problem with a doctor the others become aware of it over time - to keep it short dad had a chest problem and terrible cough had regular appointments over a 5 month period for other things, nothing was done about the cough. Mum talked to her doctor, she said get him to come and see me, made appointment monday and by wednesday had seen GP been sent for an Xray got results and a prescription for a chest infection. The result was that by the weekend the cough had gone and all of this was traced back to when my father had worked in a paper factory years before. GP's need to be good at diagnosis, if they're not we suffer. We don't have to like their attitude or lack of bedside manner, that won't kill us. They may be brilliant at other aspects of the job but we need this most important skill because if it takes too long or is incorrect the consequenses are dire. Perhaps some GP's need more support to help them, as well as not having budgets that restrict the number of tests, scans and Xrays they can request. Jan

If you are not satisfied with your diagnosis and treatment it really is worth going back. You know your body and while there are medications and procedures GP's can prescribe, they are only able to deal with the sypmtoms you describe. Many surgeries are restricted by budgets that prevent referal unless there are obvious signs and sypmtoms to see a hospital consultant. If you believe your medication is not working or the diagnosis given by your GP is not correct, going back to get a second opinion, sooner rather than later, is not only your right but your responsibility since you , better than any doctor, know your body and when it is not functioning as YOUR normal. I'd sooner be labled "neurotic" than have any procedure or take any drugs that I don't feel is curing my ailment than be another statistic. I think our biggest problem is leaving things too late before we seek medical aid for ourselves. My mother would always insist we had any illness checked but waited till she was almost crippled with pain before getting her hip replacement. Her reluctance to be a "nuisance" when she had problems with her vision (which if dealt with early enough could have been saved) is now blind in one eye after 3 ops in 5 months to rectify her visual loss. I do know one thing no-one is going to operate on my back ever again - unless they can guarantee to make me completely pain free Beryl x

Posts: 1413 (05/07/2008 23:08:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	re reading all the posts and the new ones i havent read before, some are positive and some are negative. we all have different opininions and experiences. i was laying in bed last night thinking of this thread and then i had a giggle to myself. they say behind every successful man is a women,usually referring to marriage..the wife. well behind every success doctor is a nurse behind him reminding him and pointing out this and that and pointing him or her in the right direction and that has been me many a time. those poor doctors. thinking of the two consultants i work with, well one of them when we disagree about something always say this, 'the trouble with you june is....................' then a few days later we find out i was right. then he looks at me and smiles a knowing smile. we all work as a team and that is important. I think GP surgeries do not work as a team, its just you and the GP in the room. that all, lov e june b xx

Posts: 49 (06/07/2008 10:19:17) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I have a phobia about doctors and a real fear of hospitals after being involved in a bad road accident 2 yrs ago.The doctor in A&E wanted to send me home after saying that the pain in my chest was from the airbag hitting me in the chest .My hubby insisted that i be kept in and monitered as i was having problems breathing.Six hours later i was in ITU on life support due to collapsed lungs and a ruptured spleen.I was recusatated twice and spent 5 days on life support and a further 5 days on the high dependancy unit.I go cold now when i think what could have happened if my hubby hadn't spoke out,i wouldn't be here now to tell the tale i'm sure. My own GP is lovely,very kind,always asks after my family,very chatty..............he is just a hopeless doctor,i come out sometimes forgetting what i went in for(maybe this is his intention) debbiexxx

Posts: 81 (06/07/2008 11:03:52) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I had a wonderful GP for many years until he retired,his replacements,a husband and wife were a waste of time,he daydreamed all the time you spoke to him,often having to ask you to repeat yourself because he hadn't been listening.She has a thing about Yoga,no matter what the problem she told you to go home and do yoga,after that it was religion,she told you to go home and pray.One patient told her that her priest didn't write prescriptions when she saw him,so she shouldn't tell her to pray.Needless to say i changed doctors and am satisfied with the current GP. Betty
