To me, it is getting worse. Now I hear that fish and chips shops are to be given salt cellars with fewer holes to prevent us from using too much and affecting our health. Surely we should be allowed to decide just how much salt we want? I know its not good for you but where is our freedom? its being nibbled away bit by bit with this stupid ideas the goverment come up with!

I believe its our government penny. Its the same with health. It used to be diabetics were deemd fine if they kept sugar levels in single figures. Then N.I.C.E
(National Institute for clinical excellence) came along and suddenly we were being told we had to maintain a level of 4! Quite imnpossible in my case lol Lots
of other dos and don'ts came from it too all difficult to achieve. Plus they keep moving the goal posts!

This Nanny State is definitely getting worse.
This morning the news is that Gordon Brown is telling us not to waste so much food and slating "wasteful" BOGOF offers. I don't know about the rest of us sheenies, but I don't waste food. I buy what I need plus a little for emergencies ... dried, tinned or frozen so it won't go off. The trouble with local and central government is that they are out of touch with reality. Local Council CEO earns in region of £150,000 per annum. They would be absolutely lost if they suddently had to manage on average wage, let alone benefits. Come to think of it, I think they shouldn't get more than the average wage and their business expenses should be limited to those that average person gets ... which in general is nil. I wonder who is in these "think tanks" that come up with these mad schemes (including "carbon credits")? Now, if they empolyed a few Sheenies instead ... |

control freaks. I am fed up of being dictated to and spied on. I expect someone is reading this even as I am typing it. So I had better stop. FREEDOM this

I feel very sad that children can't enjoy the simple pleasures we had, such as playing conkers at school. So what if they get a few knocks? that was all
part of the experience and we would compare bruises. They are so scared of litigation nowadays that all fun must be stopped!

If this continues we will end up not being able to decide on anything for ourselves. Most adults are able to make decisions for themselves given all the
relevant information available, we don't need government ministers (who are only human) to decide what is good or bad for us, surely the central point of
Democracy is freedom of choice!!

With regard to sugar levels for diabetics and cholesterol levels (once 7 was ok ... now told should be under 5) - how much of this is iinstigated by the drug
companies, whose vested interest is to sell more drugs. If the drug companies pay for the research which is then quoted to us as the reason why, say, more of
us need cholesterol lowering drugs then the drug companies are in for a windfall! Doesn't matter that for most the possible side effects may outweigh the
possible benefits of treatment.

Don't get me started on the Nanny State we live in at the moment - I sometime think they sit in the EU parliament in particular trying to think what they could rule on next to justify their existence. We always prided ourselves on Freedom of Choice in this country - but that seems to be diminishing daily. As for the new dictate on Salt on Fish and Chips - I already use my Freedom of Choice on the odd occasion I buy fish and chips and don't have any salt or vinegar put on - and funnily enough I hear a lot of people saying the same whilst I am waiting. Perhaps it is time the Governments gave us credit for intelligence! Now to lighten the debate - thought I would share this joke that arrived by email this morning from a pal, which sort of sums it all up really:

I think taking away freedom of coice is a very serious thing - it is treating us like kindergarten children as though we didn't have brains - and there is so much information about everywhere we are all well-informed and able to decidedon our salt intake!! Other than nanny-state they are a load of kill-joys too, it is as though you can't have any fun nowadays. When I signed for the postman this morning, he said "ta, love" and gave me a friendly smile - the government don't even like that, do they? And as for humour - do you all remember the comedy sit-coms that used to make us laugh in the 70's? Watching the repeats on satellite TV, most of the jokes wouldn't be "allowed" because they aren't "PC" but what innocent fun that was! |

To me we are not allowed to make our own mistakes anymore and I really feel we are losing freedom of speech.

The 'Nanny' state seems to be creeping into all areas of our lives - I am definitely fed up with all aspects of it. There is always someone telling you
what you will and won't do and where you can do it e.g. smoking. So many people have now given up smoking (which is good on a personal level) but leaves
the Government with a large hole in their 'coffers' - now where will they get that back from? But that would be a different debate.
On a different note, on a recent visit to my GP when feeling very sick with a virus that had laid me very low and unable to work, she proceeded to tell me that the computer had highlighted that I had taken three weeks sick in the last 12 months already and that was not acceptable! I asked 'unacceptable to whom', - I was after all the one suffering! In her words she didn't want to give me a sick note because the Government were putting pressure on them not to do so! This to someone who was feeling like they were going to pass out as soon as I stood up for any length of time and had a very physical job to do. Needless to say I walked out with my certificate! So now the Government are telling us how may times we are able to fall ill during a 12 month period! |

Oh goodness Wendy, that is the last thing you need when you're ill - having to fight with the very people caring for you - I'm incredulous.

Gosh you sure have started something here, they should start with all this gun and knife crime, at my granddaughters school the other day, my granddaughter was
told by a little girl of 9, that her brothers would be coming to get her with a knife, what is this world coming to.Janet

I am so glad to see this thread - I am so annoyed over Gordon Brown's comments this morning. I found the whole thing so patronising,
how dare he tell us what to buy. I do find it offensive that we throw away enough food to feed a small nation but I don't think that this approach is at
all acceptable. It would be interesting to see the contents of his shopping trolley and I wonder how many times a week his wife goes shopping.

Funnily enough we were talking about this this morning at craft club - and generally the feeling was 'how dare Gordon Brown tell us how to shop!'. I
do agree with the smoking laws as my husband is asthmatic and used to find it difficult to breathe if we went into the pub for a drink or a meal. However, I
do think we should be allowed to make our own decisions as long as they do not affect other people. We also need to let children take a certain amount of
risks, or they will never learn how to judge the dangers for themselves.

Even warnings they put on things are designed for the single celled amoeba, not well informed adults. I just bought a pack of Lochmuir salmon from M&S and
it says warning, contains fish! Oh really ... crikey I would never have known lol

Gordon Brown is totally out of order with his comments. In my house we do not thrown food away, it is too expensive. But has he looked at how much food gets
thrown away by supermarkets everyday because the date runs out and they can't sell it tomorrow. Surely this food can go to needy people or elderly homes,
children's homes etc.
