I believe the government has to have a role in advising people re health or health and safety etc, then it is up to the individual whether to take heed of the info or not. I actually follow quite a few of the guidelines re health ie I try to eat my 5 pieces of fruit and veg a day, I am careful with the number of eggs I consume in a week and I try to stick to safe alcohol limits. As regards to the 'two for three' or 'buy 1 get 1 free' offers, I will only take advantage of the offer if I either need it or will be able to use it. I know I am very guilty of buying more food than I can use and every week chuck out a lot of un-opened out of date food. However, I do disagree with the PM when he said that people who buy more food than they need are contributing to the cost of inflation. I think that statement was rubbish. I think Gordon Brown needs to address his remarks to the retail trade and encourage them to bring down the cost of products so people who are thrifty or live in single person househilds can take advantage of lower priced foods. It seems to me the majority of items on special offer in most stores are of the unhealthy/packaged food variety and it would be good if price reductions could be applied to fruit and veg and other healthy foodstuffs to encourage people to eat more healthily.

I also think the reason why councils/schools/government crack down on so many things is because we live in a compensation/sue culture. I think a lot of the time they are just looking after their own backs. I am forever hearing people in my area go on about things that happen at school/nursery/ on buses etc and how they are going to complain/demand compensation etc, so I am not surprised that schools ban conkers from playgrounds or schools ban the taking of trading cards to school etc. In a way they are just protecting the children while they are on school premises.
