Well my toaster cost nearly £50 but the difference is it came out of my pocket, not paid for by taxpayers ... plus I had to pay THEM something for the
privelege of having it, through taxes!

I'm a retired civil servant - and my salary, let alone my pension, came nowhere near their allowances - and the fuss and palaver over a claim for a taxi
fare or a tube fare to a meeting away from your own office - made you wonder if it was worth claiming it back. One job I did I had to travel for 3 hours each
way - I had a taxi from the station to the office - around 3 miles cross country (and I do mean country) - the auditors wanted to know why I didn't go 2
stations further on and get the bus to the office. It wasn't until I explained that I could be in the office 1/2 hour earlier and work 1/2 later doing it
my way that they realised they were getting value for money - I was in the office before the train reached the station they wanted me to get off at.

not only do they get an allowance to furnish the house they also get help with mortgage, when they sell the house they make all the profit and don't pay
anything back.

If you want to know what expenses your local councillors claimed for the last 12 months it should be easily found on your local council's website. I think
you might be surprised at how little most councillors claim in the way of expenses - I knew I was.
I agree with Joanna I wouldn't want to be an MP, Councillor or Government Minister for all the tea in China either - their job is thankless. I think that most people become a politician because they have strong beliefs and they want to make a difference. I also think MPs and councillors are paid fairly decent salaries because we want to attract the best people from across all parts of life to represent us. If we didn't pay our MPs and Councillors properly then we would be left with only the people who could afford to support themselves from their own private incomes to represent us - and that would not be fair or representative to all the people of this country. I also think it is only fair for MPs representing a constituencies outside London to receive an allowance for a second home. An MP representing say, Durham or Southampton could hardly commute to and from London every day to do their job in Parliament. I think most MPS make a lot of personal sacrifices when they become an MP and try to do a fair and decent job for the people who elected them. I doubt very much that the majority of councillors and MPs take on the job for the money. Most of them would be able to earn far higher salaries in the 'real world' and are propably making financial sacrifies as well as personal/family sacrifies by being an MP. If the allowance system for second homes is open to abuse then it needs to be tightened up. |

OH!! THAT'S EVEN WORSE!! I didn't know they got it annually! I wonder if any of
them would like to try living on my pension for a year? I don't think so.
On the radio today, they read out the menu for the G8 summit! I didn't even know what half the dishes were, and I wonder if they were told to "eat upo and be good boys?" I doubt it very much! |

They could always use the accomodation being built for the Olympics for the MPs when they stay in London................. mind you, us Londoners are paying for
that too!
I see no reason why they can't have a block of flats - owned by the Government - and people have one while they are in London - sort of a hotel if you see what I mean. There are so many run down properties that could be altered and used. C xx |

Good idea Carol, a sort of hostel. At least at the G8 the Japanese are paying, but we did pay for Brown and his entourage to get there. Bet they all flew Ist
class.
As for the Olympics, I think I am going to leave the country when that is going on. The transport system in London is pathetic already, so it will never cope. Sue |

We get very fed up about this because our local MP is Yvette Cooper - a government minister, she is married to another government minister - Ed Balls who is the MP for a neighbouring constituency - how convenient. What we want to know is - can they both claim these allowances? They are already under investigation because they claim that their London home is their second home. They live in the next town to us - a fairly depressed ex-mining town - no mines left now, where house prices are a fraction of London house prices. They come from London and most of their friends are there, obviously their children are educated there, they lived there before she became the MP for this area but they claim that they live in Yorkshire and are therefore entitled to claim second home expenses for the house in London. Oh Yeah? |

Their salaries are far greater than I can earn, and I know as a teacher I can earn a lot more than most of the people in my street with ordinary jobs or those
on benefits. When you add in the high levels of expenses that they can claim it's obscene. They should be more realistic about the amounts that can be
claimed. They shouldn't be able to claim the home they spend most time in as their second home whether it's in London or not (that's a fiddle to
keep the bills they pay to a minimum). I know when I've had to claim travel expenses I've only been allowed to claim for the cheapest method not the
quickest or most convenient. It's a gravy train and I'm sorry to say it, but I don't think some of them have the skills or talent to earn more
money in a proper job, and if they don't get re-elected they will be taking a pay cut if they haven't made contacts who will offer them silly salaries
for doing very little.
