The DS will only cut using the cartridges you own & tt fonts. You can play with shapes from other carts, just not cut them.

A much better option is surecutsalot programme. It isnt made or endorsed by Cricut/Provocraft but it beats DS hands down. Used alone you can cut basic shapes & any font/dingbat as well as shadow/weld/blackout and multicut (lets you cut thick card) Combine SCAL with a programme that can convert image files to an svg format (inkscape which is free) you are then free to cut any design you have or can draw. Converting an image to svg in inkscape then getting it to start cutting in SCAL takes half a dozen clicks and less than a minute. You will need 1 cart (to load the paper) but it doesnt matter which.

I've used mine to cut images from cds, origamic architechture, welded & shadowed words, faux scalloped bookatrix & exploding boxes.
