I think we are very lucky to have them and think they have a lot to put up with. I saw the programmes recently on Prince Philip and thought he came over as
extremely intelligent, ahead of his times and a real character. Ali x

I'm not exactly a Royalist but I do think they bring alot of revenue into the country.
I don't mind the actual Royal Family, it's ALL the "hangers' on". and there is definately a North/South divide when anything is going on. Christine xxx

I would not like to see the Royal family go, but neither do I think we should be supporting all these "hangers on". I have respect for the Queen, I
think she has done a good job over the years. Unfortunately prince Charles appears to be a spoilt child. I believe he has some-one to do all his bidding, from
dressing him to being on beck and call all day. He comes over as some-one who has no idea of the reality of life. Like some-one said on here, let them live in
a house on an estate with a mortgage, or on the state pension, that would really teach them how to survive. None of them seem to have any idea about the
problems the rest of us face. Earning enough to keep a family - worrying about redundancy - will I still be able to afford my mortgage?, my car. They can walk
the streets safely (albeit in a gold fish bowl) some of us have to use public transport late at night. They have no idea of any of these things because they
are protected everywhere they go. They have all their wealth, because unlike the rest of us they didn't have to pay inheritence tax, their palaces etc were
just handed down in the family. Most of our grand family homes are open to the public to help with the running of them, a lot of them didn't make it after
the chancellor got his payment. I don't think they bring the visitors in any more, most foreigners come to see our history and buildings. The Queen has no
say in the running of her country. I would love to see her stand up and voice her own oppinions sometime. I have met royalty over the years (through my
husband's work) and I never curtsied, I don't have enough respect for that. Can't think what sort of a king Charles will make (if he ever gets
there) William might be better, but I would like to bet that this country will be is such a bad state, that it's people will no longer put up with the kind
of family we have now. They will have to come into the 21st century, and the hangers on will have to get a proper job.

I agree with you Coralie, I think that most of the Royal family would have no idea how to survive in the real world without all their servants and bodyguards
and what not. The other thing is I believe that every member of the senior Royal Family is also a 'hanger on'. I really think that in a modern society
we do not need a monarchy, whether it brings in tourism or not. I firmly believe their time is over.
I agree that William and Harry are doing their bit by joining the Forces, however their privileges are still extended. No other member of the Forces is following the same career path as William, no other member of the Forces uses Royal Air Force fighter planes to swan about the country and land in girl friend's back gardens. That is just taking the p*** out of us tax payers and everyone involved in the defense of our country. Those fighter planes were needed in Afghanistan while William had one as almost as his own private taxi service. I do not buy the story from the defence people who said that Wills needed to get in air hours - if he needed to get in air time, then let him do it active service like any other pilot. William will never use that expensive training in active service. IMO he was just indulging himself/being indulged at playing figher pilots. Now he is away off to learn to sail a ship, more training that he will never utilise. Next thing he will be away playing with tanks and guns and then it will be some fun as a marine. He might as well have a go at being a train driver, driving a steam train and a fire engine while he is at it. He is playing at being a solder, pilot, sailor and we are funding the bill - whether it is his 'wages', the expensive training and all the extra security that goes with him as he travels. I will give credit where it is due, at least Prince Andrew did prope active service in the Falklands, and Harry did a bit in Afghanisatan but nowwhere near as much as regular member of the forces. I am getting off my soap box now to print off some floral fantasy papers to make a special card for my sister. |

I'm a big fan of the Queen, but not so sure about the rest of them. However, I think having a politician as the head of state would be even worse.

I have a great affection for the Royal Family. I think the Queen has been a wonderful head of state and I'm sure Charles will too. I think (contrary to
others I know) that he is very grounded and aware of the plight of the less well off. I know their private lives have sometimes been a bit of a mess but so
have a lot of other families and I don't hear them getting condemned for it.

how would you like people to criticise you, because you all seem happy to criticise other people. i feel so sorry for ALL the members of the royal family
beeing always in the public eye and people think they can say what they want about them. i would not want to be in that position.
i personally have a lot of time for them all and they will always have my respect and my support. you all should be honoured to live in a country where we have a royal family that have so much respect in the world today. Queen Elizabeth II will always be a legend in her life time and when she is no longer with us. you should all feel honoured she is your Queen. it hurts me so much when people down grade our royal family. if i could i would get rid of olive cromwell statue outside parliament, i think it is an insult to keep him there. a very evil man |

Im for the Royals in general The Queen does a wonderful job! Im not so sure about Charles. It cant be easy knowing that one day you will be King but never
knowing exactly when!
I will find it hard to accept if Camilla was ever made Queen. As for William and Harry I think they have grown into fine young men! From birth William has been groomed to be King and it cant be that much different for Harry! neither can do the jobs they really want to do because of who they are and the enormous security risk to their fellow soldiers. I think they cope with it all extremely well and I know their mother would be so proud of them! I just wish sometimes the press would leave them alone to have some sort of private life without it being spread all over the papers! I am proud to be British and have a Royal Family. Its part of our heritage and part of what makes Britain Great!!! The direct Royal family didnt ask to be Royals they were born into it and its been a lifetime job. Some have married into the family and have had to learn to cope with all that entails! We all make mistakes and the Royal family are no different, but while in general our mistakes are just that OURS! When a Royal makes a mistake what ever it may be or splits from a girl or boyfriend its plastered across the papers and television for months and even years! The alternative to a Royal Family fills me with horror! Who would be President? But thats another debate and a road I dont want to go down!! Margaret xx |

I actually do think they have a great deal more knowledge of what's going on at "ground level" than people realise. Charles I have to say
isn't my cup of tea but nonetheless I think he will actually be quite a good King. The Press has a great deal to answer for in how they portray the Royal
Family and rarely do we see reporting of a great deal of the good things that they undertake.
I do feel that they are a draw for tourists too - I can't think of anyone who would visit London and not go and see Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London etc. I for one, would not have their role in life for all the tea in China - it is not their fault they were born into the lives they have. I certainly wouldn't like to be under the public eye 24/7 and be told "that's it, you're going to be King/Queen and you HAVE to be brought up this way and you can't do this and you can't do that, etc" Sure they have their faults and make mistakes but don't we all? The difference is, ours are private - theirs are slapped all over the TV and the papers. C xx |

Millie Sue I'm definitely south of the 'divide' and not Scottish but agree whole heartedly with you and what you have said as you will see in the
earlier bits of this thread.
France, Germany, America all have no royalty but do have elected heads of state. None of the royals are elected so why is it olay for them to be figureheads?? My stepson is consultant to a large development going on in the south west and who is funding this development? The EU has put forward the multimillions to bring work, tourists and self respect to the impoverished south west. Ironic isn't it that Prince Charles has just made a multimillion pound fortune from Duchy of Cornwall yet there is high unemployment, lack of affordable housing for Cornish born people and the Duchy is raking it in. If the Americans, Japanese like the royals so much then please take them back with you and the country may have more money in the coffers especially when we have sold off the extremely large estates. As millie sue said it was the sweat and, in many cases, blood and life of ordinary artisans that built our famous buildings and most were lucky if they got paid. |
