The plastic and glass box which also has to have tins - The Council insist that they are washed out - no problems - I am very fussy about doing this. Its mainly milk containers and a few tins, oh and coffee jars. But since the dishwasher was plumbed in I have been putting the tins and jars in there and they are coming out spotless - Paul thinks I have lost the plot - but I am sure the wee recycle manny will be happy lol

Well, She, I always put my bottles through a wash in the dishwasher before putting them for recycling, but not tins!!!!

Well I for one agree with you, and if I had a dishwasher I would put them in. Couldn't ever put dirty bottles, tins, plastic food containers into the
recycling. Our Council states that they have to be washed out anyway but I have been doing it for years.

I always rinse out tins, bottles, jars, etc. Can't honestly say they go in the dishwasher though! Lol. But then, maybe I would if I had a full size
one............... Our area doesn't take plastic or cardboard unfortunately but they take a lot of things other councils don't, like batteries, car
batteries, clothes, shoes, etc.

hmmm....I think if I had a dishwasher I'd be doing the same She....I wash mine by hand but would much rather leave a machine to do it as well...not my most
favorite job

I wash mine out too She. I haven't the luxury of a dishwasher (no room) but couldn't bear the smell of sour milk droplets or tomato from baked beans
tins all in the bottom of the recycle boxes. If you can squeeze the odd one into the dishwasher then why not!!!

lol - it fills up the spaces so it seemed a good idea. Must say I have felt the difference on my hands - they dont hurt anymore with constantly doing dishes.
Our Council are sticklers for the correct procedures with the recycling - if you are 'tagged' twice you face a £400 fine! |

Sorry to be a bit of stirrer here but the whole point of recycling is to save costs and more importantly energy usage. Putting cans and bottles to be recycled,
in the dishwasher, ever though its filling spaces is using energy unnecesarily.
Living in the deep deprived South West Of Scotland, we still have regular power cuts and not all down to adverse weather. When there isn't enough power generated electricity is redirected from the countryside to the main towns in our area and thats a fact. Whats wrong with giving the tins and bottles a good old rinse out with cold water??? stepped down off my soapbox, made from recylced plastic, folded it up and put it back in my pocket. No, the recycling man will love you. My brother did a friend a favour and covered a week of the recycling lorry for him and he sauid it was the most disgusting
job he had ever done.
A lot of people put things in the bins still half full, unwashed and then they sit out for up to a week. He said by the end of the day he had been covered in stale beer, wine etc, almost lost a finger on tin lids and been covered in pasta sauce etc. By comparison others had washed everything, stacked and separated and marked sharp tin lids etc. Not to mention that dirty tins etc encourage rodents to inhabit residential areas (my Granny would have a fit if I put anything out dirty) she would say "No wonder Mrs So & So has rats have you seen the state of their Midden" (Glaswegian through and through!) The dishwasher uses the same amount of water and power for doing just the dishes as adding the tins etc - I have had several nasty cuts when washing them out
by hand. And last week when that box was emptied the chappie was pleased - he said that the vast majority of people just chuck things in - even half full tins
of dog food.
We only need to put the washer on every other day with it basically just being the two of us - and over a fortnight period we average using about a dozen tins, so it isnt really wasteful  and it makes my life that bit easier

i stick mine in dishwasher too if i'm doing a load so cant see why it would cost any more to add them too or use any more energy either

I always wash out my tins and bottles also put boiling water in large plastic coke bottles to shrink them first before they go in.....Ann d xxx
