O/T - whatever happened to thin sliced bread?

Whatever happened to thin sliced? I got a loaf of medium sliced bread today by a well-known Bread Manufacturer and there was only 15 slices in it plus the crusts (good job I only bought it because it was reduced to 50p in the local shop!) It will make nice toast, but far to thick for sarnies, I really don't like doorsteps! There is supposed to be a shortage of wheat and the price of a loaf is going up all the time - perhaps it is time to bring back the thin-sliced loaf (and it would be good for us, as we wouldn't be eating so much in a round of sandwiches.) We would also be helping the world wheat shortage. Although the baker's might not agree as they wouldn't sell so many loaves! Could we start a campaign for Thin sliced bread? Mags

It is a nuisance, as you get less sandwiches from a loaf plus they are too 'bready'. Bring back thin sliced loaves

I tend to buy uncut bread anyway then I can cut it as I want. As OH is mad about bread it doesn't last long anyway Jan

A con by the manufacturers to make us buy more, and it doesn't make sense when they are telling us about the world-wide wheat shortage! I quite like slightly thicker bread for my toast, - but for sandwiches, like Maureen, I like to taste the filling. I find these days I am being naughty and leaving my crusts because they are too thick,or cutting them off before I make the sandwiches - something we would never have done when younger. How many times in the past have I told the children to eat their crusts! I wonder what would happen if "thin sliced" was offered again - what would the majority of consumers choose. I could buy unsliced bread and do it myself - but I can never keep the cuts straight! My grandfather and Mum excelled at cutting very thin sliced bread - particularly the original Hovis - probably a skill they learned in the War! on the subject of Hovis - anybody remember the tiny little individual loaves you could buy for a few pennies? they were lovely - bet they would cost a fortune now!

I am not a bread lover at all but my hubby lives on it and cannot do without his butties for work. Love Issy
