DEBATE Flying , is it worth the hassle nowadays? |

Personally if I can travel by car, eurostar etc. I will. Flying is just such a hassle with all the new security measures. I agree with many of them but some I
don't. For instance, at Dublin airport, the metal detectors were going off left right and centre and security did not seem at all bothered, yet God forbid
if you had a lipstick in your bag. I had visions of women attacking the captain and saying "Take me to Cuba or you get a makeover"! I know security
is no laughing matter and we have to take it seriously, but in some ways the terrorists have won because they make it so difficult for anyone to fly.

I have to fly as my parents live in Spain, I hate doing it, am a terrified flyer but to see Mum & Dad makes all the hassle so worthwhile.

I love flying and would do it any any opportunity. I have been through Dublin airport a lot and have never been
stopped for anything. The security was tighter when the `troubles` were at their height, but now it's a very easy airport to get through. I have been
stopped every time going into Japan but I think that's because I am a female travelling alone.
I am a very bad traveller by car or train, and I will never travel by coach. Sue |

Haven't flown since 2000 - we now travel to France (sometimes with a caravan) instead of farther climes and take the ferry (or occasionally the
Eurotunnel). Far less hassle and don't have to be there three hours beforehand just to sit around doing nothing! We are going mad next year and crossing
over to Ireland with the caravan.
Although I must admit, it is funny if we are pulled over for a spot check and the customs officer asks to look in our caravan. Last time he only opened one of the top lockers and six large bags of crisps fell on him. He didn't even look in the large bathroom to see if we had a stowaway!!! Nina x |

Exactly Nina. We used to go to America on a regular basis, now I just cannot be bothered with all the hanging around the airport, having to take so little on
board, wondering if your luggage will be in the same country as you, customs at the other end, waiting for luggage etc. On my last flight I even had to take my
shoes off!
If I can go by car or train now I will. We drive to Germany and Belgium, we get the Eurostar to France and have great breaks. Maybe in the future I will get bored and think, okay I will fly and spend a day or so doing it, but for now, I am content with Europe. |

Last September we were at Gatwick on our way to Las Vegas and I had my tic tacs taken off me. Why? Did they think I was trying to smuggle drugs into the country? I get a lot of headaches and I had to put 2 tablets in my jeans pocket so no one would find them, and I felt like a criminal. How stupid is that? x x |

I must admit I feel the same about flying too - it is beyond a joke. Yes we need the security checks but sometimes you do wonder if things are as they should
be. One thing that really gets me is the way you have to take your passport out of it's case - why when you can see the picture just the same with it in
the case?
I once came through with all of us being hassled in this way - being shouted at and directed here and there as if we were entering a prison compound and yet some were going at another desk in full muslim cover up - were they being taken to a seperate room to reveal faces - one does wonder!!! Flights used to be so nice with sweeties on take off and all sorts of nice touches - not any more. They are very stressfull. Certainly the arrival 2 hours before departure and the extra hour on the plane waiting for an airspace does make you think is it all worth while. I'm going by coach in September and will certainly compare. Ann xxx |

Oh no please don't get me started on flying
We are off to Austria
again for our two week holiday on Wednesday and I'm already dreading the hassle I know we are going to get at Gatwick Airport. It's a nightmare every
year trying to get Nicola on the plane. We have to wait ages for a mini bus to take us out onto the tarmac where the plane is then we usually hold everyone up
while they try and find the raising lift to get Nicola on the plane. One year it was actually following the minibus out to the plane and went off somewhere
else. The Pilot had to delay take off for almost three quarters of an hour with everyone else waiting on the plane It was highly embarrassing and when we eventually got to the other end the pilot
actually apologised to us and told us we were there and it wasn't our fault the equipment wasn't! Then on our return Nicola's wheelchair has been
put on the luggage carousel, hardly useful when she is unable to walk at all. I have to say, that you can't fault Innsbruck or Saltzburg airports they are
absolutely wonderful. I'm so sorry, rant over, but please keep your fingers crossed for us next week lol. Trouty x (Jean)

I would rather eat my own liver now than fly, as I have such bad claustrophobia

I haven't flown for about 20 years and it was bad enough then so it must be a lot worse now with all the do & don'ts. I think I will just stay in
this country and enjoy what we have here.

Give me flying any day. How else do you get abroad in such a short space of time and as for the damage to the environment, don't all other modes of
transport have exactly the same effect?

I love flying but am a nervous wreck in a car on a motorway. There are so many idiots speeding on the roads and we always see accidents. I'd rather fly any
day. If you accept that you have to be there 2hrs. before and that the security checks are there for your protection. I've never had a problem and always
enjoy browsing in the book shops and duty free. Give me flying any time.

I love flying only went abroad two years ago for the first time and love the landing and taking off but everytime I go through the security I bleep and get
searched. It upset me the first time. I was on two crutches and had to have help walking cos the crutches had gone through the scan with the hand luggage.
I've got used to it now and just laugh. Also drove to France last September in my Motorhome following my brother in his and guess who got searched at the
Ferry going out and coming back. I must look like a terroist.

I only started flying again about two years ago after suffering a real phobia for over 20 years. I willed myself to do it before I reached 60 (I've still a
couple of years in hand
I can't say that I enjoy the experience but these are places I would never have seen otherwise. I mainly travel by car and we explore the island we live on, the only downside is the appalling weather but sure you always make the best of it. |

Tina Im with you on this I just cant be bothered with flying!
I frequently go to France to see my son and family and many times I have been asked why I dont fly! My answer--For a start just getting to Heathrow or Gatwick is a nightmare then theres customs etc and having to get there so early and wait for a plane that might or might not take off on time. Same the other end PLUS do you have any luggage and the journey from CDG airport into Paris! From there you have to go to where ever you are staying! With Eurostar even with having now to get to St Pancras everything is much less hassle and sooo much quicker City centre to city centre in less than 2hrs 20 mins! The otherday it took us 1hr 45 mins to get into Heathrow to pick someone up!! we live only 20 miles away! Margaret xx |

I love flying - always have. The 3 hour check-in is a bit boring but we just look on it as a necessary evil. I always strip off belts and shoes etc as we enter
the security area and have never had the alarms go off - Neil always forgets something and gets beeped every time
Will be flying off to the apartment tomorrow afternoon - even with the long check- in I know I am guaranteed some sunshine just over 7 hours after leaving home. Jo xxx |

I know flying is bad for the environement, but as I only do it once a year, and I don't drive a car, I don't think I'm doing too much harm.
