DEBATE Flying , is it worth the hassle nowadays?

I love to watch people going about their daily business and can sit with a coffee or a wine and just watch the world pass me by. I have been to quite a few places that there is no way I could have seen without flying but for the next few years at least will will be holidaying at home, both the dogs are getting on a bit now and I don't feel it's fair to put them in kennels so we will be booking a cottage again and taking them with us. We went to Norfolk earlier in the year and will be going back in September, what a lovey place. You have to just chill out and take your time at the airport, make sure you follow the directions as to what you can and can't have in your hand luggage and you'll be fine. If you really want to get out there and see the world you don't have a choice, it's not just the weather in this counrty it's the fact that as we only get a short summer we get fleeced by people wanting to make enough to get them through the winter. Posts: 1438 (19/07/2008 00:08:42) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	well i only started flying 4 years ago, and i was scared stiff and only flying to germany. the following year i flew to canada, but i did not like flying back in the night and when they started to shut the windows, i had a small panic attack. i flew to switzerland 2 years ago and this year flying to norway. i dont mind flying but if you want to go to those places like new zealand, you have to no choice. FIONA. i have always wanted to go to new zealand, can you pack me into your suitcase next year. i am on a diet to lose some weight, i can lose more...................................... hoping to go there when i retire because i cannot have 3 weeks off together at work. love june b

If I thought about flying I wouldn't do it and my husband is quite a nervous flyer but if you want to visit far off places you just have to get on with it. Our theory is that our holiday starts the minute we lock the front door. Just get to the airport in loads of time, enjoy everything it has to offer and simply accept the rules and regulations. June, we too are off to New Zealand in January, my brother and his family live there, so if Fiona can't fit you in I'm sure we could try...lol. We're also taking my 78 year old mam with us, we've been before and we know the journey is quite something but we're all really looking forward to it. So, all you nervous flyers, just give it a go have fun! Jules xxx

I am a nervous flyer and I know that it can be a pain at the airports through security but it is for our own good. We always get there early and enjoy the antics of fellow travellers. In fact I feel sorry for the airlines sometimes as so many people are wound up about flying they take it out on the staff. We try to have a laugh and joke with the security people to lighten their burden (except for the occasional jobsworth) and we are so used now to what we can and can't take we prepare everything beforehand to make the transit easier. And if there are any queries about what we are doing we don't take it personally - we just comply as far as possible. We travel on the cheap airlines but some people expect all the frills when they've paid not a lot for their journey. We have been delayed, we have been held up, late flights etc but it's all part of the adventure of getting to your destination and only made unbearable by people who's lives are so important that they want everything their way and now! Airports are a fantastic chance to 'people watch' and try to understand human behaviour emphasis on the try! Hugs and happy holidays to all wherever they go Marion W

I would rather just get a cottage up north or down south, then we can drive and take my doggy. I refuse to go on holiday without him. My mum and dad would love to have him, he's happy there, and they are the only folk i would ever leave him with. But i'd rather not holiday than be without my doggy. I am a complete wreck by take off, and never enjoy the holiday because of thinking of the flight home. I have no desire to visit place abroad anymore. I would much prefer to see parts of our dear old country before it is totally ruined by urban sprawl. Coralie

We save up and go on holiday every 2 or 3 years. The cats go into a quite expensive but excellent FAB approved cattery and we choose the flights with the widest seats and which have individual games/tv consoles. 8 hours disappear when you've watched a couple of movies and played quiz games against other people on the same flight. If we didn't save up and go on some long haul flights we would never have:- Been to New Orleans and sailed down the Mississippi on a paddle steamer, listening to a live jazz band and eating gumbo and jambalaya. Visited the turtle farm at Grand Cayman - just like Jane McDonald on that Cruise tv show. Bought fab silver jewellery and snorkled in Cozumel. Swam with dolphins and visited Mayan villages and temples in Mexico. Sailed round Barbados in a catamaran. Gone on the Jaws ride 14 times in Florida. I still have some "got to see's" left - Egypt, Panama Canal, Alaska and the Antarctic. And the Jaws ride again. Lots of saving up to do and plenty of long haul flights to go on. Alison x

No matter if we drive all the way to Cornwall or pay £1000 for a boathouse in Norfolk we are home after 4 days max. l dislike sun,sea,sand, so if we don't go abroad the first week of May we have had it for the year, it's too hot after that. My fave destination is Turkey, but after 5 years and having a 3 hour wait at the airport on our return each time we don't do that anymore. l live in a glorious place and in 5 mins can see fantastic ever changing countryside. Not for the next few weeks though, its peak holiday time and we can't even get into town with all the cars and caravans nose to tail so we stay put. When my sons were younger our fave place was Tenby

I am here with her at the moment and will be back here in October when she has her first baby. I am flying home to the UK on Monday, I can't say that I enjoy the flying, especially as I travel alone, but it's the only way to see my daughter and it's worth every hour that I spend on the plane and it's an 11 hour flight. It is worth the effort, and tonight I have just got back from an evening on the Queen Mary ship, for a cabaret and dinner, it was a great evening out. It's time I went to bed now, it's 11.45pm Saturday night here, so I'll say 'goodnight all'. Ann x

Not keen but it is a means to an end so try not to think about it and just get on with it. The flight to L A in April or more the trip back, did get to me, (11 hrs) and I did say it had done me for flying for a while, but we have booked a flight for September so I will have to get over it. We always loved the ferry and driving through France, it was part of the holiday. Ali x

The minute we lock the front door that's it....we're on holiday and always try to go with an open mind and take whatever life throws at us. If we have a delay then so be it, better safe than sorry! If it's noisy in the hotel...ask correctly if anything can be done about it........check first it isn't an 18-30's (although we've been in hotels we're it has been and to be honest these have acted far more 'adult' than those that have children and think it's a free for all letting their kids run a mock while they get 'sloshed' in the bar each night) If we hadn't been willing to fly then we wouldn't have seen the places we have or met the many lovely people. As for the environment? There are far worse things going off to be bothered about!!! Christine xxx

The thing I do not like about flying is the take off. everything else is Ok. What I am not looking forward to is the US customs who look at everyone as if they are arch criminals. They once asked my son (who was four at the time) why he was in Florida. I understand the need for all security but trying to catch a child out was uncalled for. Linda

Never ever have any hassle at Gatwick (my main departure airport) and never lost any luggage (bet that happens next time now I'm bragging about it!). I'll do whatever they want if it makes me safe, and as far as I'm concerned look on it all as an adventure. Wouldn't sacrifice my well earned holidays for a few rules that in my opinion, aren't hard to follow anyway! Jx
