Is there such a thing in your opinion? This is not meant to offend anyone.
I live in the North East and on tv we always come across has living in
street houses with dirty back alleys. But for those who never come up this way
we have the north yorkshire moors beautiful northumberland the yorkshire
dales and we are only 2hrs away from the lake district. If we are to
believe tv those of you in the south go to the laundrette has in eastenders
and dont have time to chat because you live busy lives.
We holiday all over the country in our caravan and we have met some very
nice people from ALL of England Ireland Scotland and Wales
WHATS YOUR OPINION and have you been up NORTH?

Gill I'm also from the north east originally. According to TV and other media up north starts at Watford which is one helluva long way south on my map

Sweeping generalisations always miss the point, don't they? I am a 'southerner' who visits the North regularly and has many friends around the
country. As a person living in the countryside, I cannot possibly have exactly the same outlook as a person
living in a city. Although our lives are influenced by where we live it is people that count, not where they live.

Hi Gill, I personally don't think of a N/S divide, I live in the south (but have my own washing machine, ha ha)
Have travelled all over the country & think that most people are friendly enough as long as they are approached with the right atttude. We have friends all over the British Isles, & keep in touch regularly Jan x |

My parents lived in Cheshire for a while and people were definitely more friendly. People in the South are generally more reserved, although must admit I go
out of my way to talk to people ( probably because originally I was a Londoner). Have also visited Scotland, and they were friendly too.
Yes Carol - north starts at Watford! and Gill forget the idea that we are all in and out of the launderette - lucky if you can find one down here - they have all closed - as apparently the affluent south (haha) all own their own washing machines and tumble dryers! I think there is a north/south divide when it comes to house prices - absolutely ridiculous in our area at the moment. When I think that my pal recently sold their beautiful huge converted church in East Anglia for less than my son paid for his piddly twobedroomed middle of terrace house down here - grrrrr! Youngsters at the moment just don't have a chance of buying a house in the south. Mags |

well I live slap bang in the middle, and never even think of a divide. North to me is Scotland, and South is Cornwall. I have some
lovely friends in Yorkshire and above, and down south, it's the people as you say and not the area.
I am amazed at the difference in house prices though. Watching some of these people who are "moving to the country" on the TV programmes, I am so envious sometimes of the beautiful places that they can afford. You can buy a big 4 bedroomed house in Derbyshire, for the same price as a 1 bedroom flat in London!! I think , or at least I get the impression, that those living "up north" still have more of a community spirit, it's sad to say that people lead much busier lives nowadays and very often too busy to even get to know their neighbours very well. xx |

I find it difficult to think of any divide as I have relatives from all over the British Isles and further afield. One set of grandprents were Welsh and
Cornish, the others were Scottish and Northern Irish. As I grew up we visited relatives from these various areas and those that had moved to Kent, Lancashire
& Cheshire. I spent a lot of my childhood in Bucks and most of my adult life in London.
I think northerners are more likely to speak and smile at strangers but, if you take the initiative and speak first most southerners respond warmly. I thought there was more of a generation gap than north/south divide, so I decided this New Year to smile at all the youngsters I see in the street. I expected teenagers might sneer or be abusive. In fact, I have found that most return the smile and some even open doors and speak to me. I know from the news that there are some really unpleasant, violent people around who will cause trouble and problems for society whatever is done for them. However, I do believe that, on the whole, people are inherently good and will respond well to being treated well - whether they come from the north, south or are old or young.

I'm so pleased you all have your own washing machine in the south lol and believe me we dont all have outside lavvies anymore my eldesy has 4 in his house. I have always lived in the South of England. According to the TV I should be better off, drive a `Chelsea tractor` (4x4), be healthier, and have a large
mortgage. Hmmm... I'm self employed (aka skint most of the time), travel by bus, falling to bits and living in a rented house. I have got a washing machine
tho, which is handy as there isn't laundrette for miles!!

I lived my first 25 years up north and the next 21 so far down south!
I'm not sure I could say exactly what or why - but in my opinion there is definitely a difference - I feel it every time I visit my family in Manchester. Personally I prefer it down south - maybe not because I have to live in a tiny flat when I could afford something bigger in Manchester, but then again I wouldn't earn as much up north either - swings and roundabouts I suppose, what suits one person won't suit the next. People are friendly all over if you don't make assumptions about them just because of what they do or where they live etc. Just look at all the friends we've all made on here irrespective of where we live! sounds a bit trite to say there are good and bad everywhere - think there is a perceived divide in some people's minds - I have never lived properly north
but have lived in east anglia, london, south east generally and then last 25 years in the southwest and I would say I couldn;t really mind where I was as I
know there would be some nice people around - you just gravitate to those that fit in with how you are
but has to be said my stint in a weeny flat in Battersea was the hardest - central London can be a hard place to live - I am definitely a country girl at heart! |

I live on the beautiful Shetland Islands, but was born in Devon and brought up in Lyme Regis, Dorset. I still visit family in Devon and Dorset regularly, my
husband is Scottish. Things get a bit funny sometimes as my parents have a problem understanding him and his mother can't understand me. We had a big party
for her 80th birthday a few years back and Robert took me around the room to introduce me to friends and relations he hadn't seen for a while. Each time,
after telling them who I was, he said 'sorry, she's English' it was all tongue in cheek tho and we all had a good laugh. I do shout at the tv
occasionally when sports announcers always refer to English athletes as English, but if they are Welsh, Scottish or Irish they are British.

I think living in London can be tough because it's full of people from everywhere but London. Many areas of London used to have a core of Londoner's
born and bred and used to have a sort of village feel, areas such as Bermondsey. Because of the diversity in London now many people feel isolated and cautious
of others or overwhelmed by what they perceive as ghetto areas where groups of folk of similar origin have gathered together.
In reality, most people are friendly if someone is brave enough to make the first move to smile or speak. Luckily, I've always been a bit gobby so I don't find it hard to be first to smile and talk. Very occasionally, someone has looked at me as though I have two heads but mostly they start to smile or talk. No one has ever been abusive and no-one died from a strange look. LOL Lynn x |

I personally don't think there is a divide. I have lived all over the country north and south, and find most people friendly. My daughter-in-law is Spanish
and lived in London for 25 years. She has visited many countries and worked in some, BUT she had never been out of London except for university in Bristol. She
had never been further north than the M4. Her work colleagues were apalled when she said she was moving to Manchester. A dirty/horrible place was mentioned.
Needless to say they had never ventured up north or they would have seen the beautiful scenery around Manchester. The moors and the peak district are a few
minutes drive. The house prices around the country are levelling off too. My daughter lives in Surrey, but the price of houses is pretty much what they are
here.(Lancashire) I just think in some peoples minds (who have never visited) that the north appears grimy, with men in flat caps and whippets. Most of the so
called north south divide is in the minds of people who still have that impression. Most of the larger cities have rough areas, whether they are in the north
or south.

I too live in the North East (and am so proud of the fact!!) - but did live in the south and worked in London for a few years many moons ago.
THE NORTH IS JUST SO MUCH BETTER!! So there probably is a N/S divide - and I know which is the better option! Out roads are much better than in the south where congestion is much more of an issue (even considering the westeren bypass round the Metro Centre!); You're right about the stunning locations on our doorstep - but look how lovely Durham and Newcastle are! Hartlepool has been transformed with the marina development - and I'm sure Sunderland has but I haven't been there for a while! You don't see pit heaps these days and we don't all race pigeons. We had some friends staying last weekend as their daughter wanted to see Durham as she was considering it as a university place. She loved it -a and even they were amazed at its quick travel time to London .......! I'd better be quiet now as I don't want people to discover us too much - heavens forbid we may turn like the south!! |

I live the the North East, Hartlepool to be precise. There is as much of a North/South divide as we allow. I much prefer to live in the North anyway much
cleaner air than big cities here. Any I have never had clogs, cloth cap or a whippet. As previously stated our town has much improved over the last 10 years
or so. We have a fab marina now, great restaurents and will host the last leg of the Tall Ships race in a couple of years time.

I'm a Yorkshire lass who lived half her life in London. When I was moving to Sheffield (which according to some is North Midlands!!) our personnel people
wanted to know how I would manage up in the north - they were a bit taken aback when I said I was a 'tyke' . And the people in the Sheffield office
were a bit suspicious until I made my northern credentials very clear. And the sale of my 3 bed in Sutton, Surrey bought me a very nice 4 bed in one of the
best areas of Sheffield.
My eldest nephew is a 'Man of Kent' who moved to Yorkshire at 2 years old (!) - and 'escaped' back to the S East as soon as he finished uni. According to him the worst thing his parents could have done to him was move away from Kent!! Liz |

The media like to create steroetypes and some people still think that what may have been true 50 years ago - still is, but only because they have never been
there.
As a Londoner born and bred I have to say it's changed over time. It's not always the friendliest of places with too many people in too much of a hurry. But when there's a problem people still pull together, and there's nothing like a serious hold up to get people chatting. There are about a dozen families in my street that have been here for years and we're all friendly and helpful, but some households change so quickly you don't get the chance to get to know them. My mum still keeps me up to date on the happenings in the street I was brought up on. My in laws all live in Manchester and I have noticed that the community seems to be more settled where they live, people don't appear to move very far and when they meet up in town or wherever they always have time to chat and keep up with what family and mutual friends are doing etc. At first they all thought I was posh because of my accent, my father inlaw did wear a flat cap, but none of them kept whippets or pigeons. Can't add to what has been said already. I was born in London, lived all over the place. My Nana was Welsh, Great Grandma French, Dads parents came from
devon and one Great Grandparent was German. So that makes me a Hienz 57 lol. Home is where the heart is they say and if you are friendly then people will talk
and smile regardless of where they come from in our world.
