Posts: 29931 (07/08/2008 13:01:02) Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : None I know last time many people agreed with them however I thought I would bring this up again for a couple of reasons. 1. it was reported in the papers this week just how much revenue these cameras have brought in and many people have lost their licences as well as jobs. 2. it doesn't stop speeding, people slow down when they get near one but then speed up again after. 3. Only this weekend we were nearly knocked off the road by an idiot in a van with his phone permanantly attched to his right hand and ear while he tried to do everything with his left hand. Now THAT is a dangerous driver not someone doing a couple of miles over the speed limit, but he never gets caught as speed cameras don't catch people like him and they are around every day. Get rid of the cameras and put more police on the roads!

They will get the revenue from somewhere so if not from speeding motorists then from a raise in council tax. Sarah xxx

Posts: 223 (07/08/2008 13:59:44) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	If the money from the speed cameras was used to make the roads safer, or to provide safe play areas for children away from busy roads, or to resurface our pot-holey roads (the road outside my parents is terrible - and its a busy road/bus route) then perhaps I might agree with the cameras more. The argument for them was that they were placed in accident blackspots - I don't think this can be true of all the cameras that there are now. As for mobile phones - I can guarantee to see at least 3 people using them on my way home from work. Janet

Sarah xxx My problem is they are using them instead of policing the roads and catching the real dangerous drivers, like the idiot that nearly had us off the road. Its easy for them, they are cash cows and that's all they worry about, getting the money, never mind the real dangerous idiots out there.

We came home one night past a mobile unit at the end of the road, saw a stolen car being driven at speed through the park next door. The police were "too busy" to send anyone even tho I informed the area control that they had a traffic car just 100 yards around the corner. Their argument about it being safety doesnt wash, there are quite a few 50/60 roads between Bristol & Weston that have been pretty much accident free but funny how when the council have added speed cameras they dropped the limit to 30/40. Even funnier that now the councils dont get the cash Swindon has stated they are considering stopping the cameras. In motoring circles they were considered one of the "worst" counties to speed in, specially along the m4 with there almost always being at least 1 camera somewhere on a hidden bridge.

I know I shouldn't take the general to be the particular, but having been caught speeding twice (guilty the first time on a clear road; extenuating circumstances the second and only a little over the limit) I am much more careful now, not only to avoid being caught again but the Speed Awareness Course I opted for the second time in lieu of points and a fine brought home to me the responsibilities I have as a driver. So cameras certainly stopped me speeding (most of the time). As for people who use a phone while driving.....I would confiscate both phone and car, take the driver out and shoot him/her at dawn.

If that isn't proof that they were installed just to raise money, I don't know what is! Margaret x

Drivers just speed up again once past them. As to mobile users - they need to be put in prison or given hard labour, or better still have their car confiscated! So many accidents around here are caused by stupid drivers on their mobiles. Grrrrr....... Jan

I have always thought they were a stealth type tax and not so much a road safety thing. I know in black spots they are needed but on average I don't think they are necessary. I don't believe most motorists blatantly abuse the speed limit. Shame they can't catch real criminals. Chrissie x

They should be stopped and then to make the punishment fit the crime, their phone should be placed under the front wheel of their car and then they should be made to drive off. What ever the penalty is it's only any good if people are caught. It might be better if all those cameras were lowered and used to catch phone users. As for speeding well the new specs cameras that calculate average speeds on a stretch of road will catch those who only slow down for the cameras. Jan

Get the Police out the vans and one the streets where their presence is required. Caroline.

(accident blackspots I think not). I'm lucky enough to live in Co. Durham where they have either none or one - and we have the lowest accident rates. So really I can't see their use at all. I much prefer the flashing speed signs that are becoming more popular - it concentrates the mind much better. Topic every driver has opinions on!! Barbara x

I'm afraid I have to agree, people know where they are, slow down and then speed up again. I totally agree about the mobile phones, I think they're one of the biggest hazards on the road. 3 times my son has been rear ended, twice at traffic lights, and once, in a layby where he'd stopped to have some lunch! All 3 blokes were on their phones!
