I've phoned the college today to ask if I can get financial help if I sign up to the floristry course as I'm on incapacity benefit and I'm thinking
ahead, when the doctor finally decides I'm mentally well enough to start work again I'll be able to look for a job in floristry or flower arranging
without having the job centre telling me I'm not qualified and how about a nice office job (which is how I became ill in the first place). No was the
reply, I have to pay full price. What part of benefit don't they understand. I can't afford the £274 each for both years and exam fee of £119.
They'll accept direct debit but only over 6 months. Dad's told me to call in the JC tomorrow to see what they say about it. I wouldn't mind, but
when I signed on to do that 10 week course they told me then that I'd get help if I wanted to go further. It's not fair, I'm trying to better
myself and I'm being stopped from doing that, it's really upsetting.

Amanda that is such a shame, hope the JC can help. There must be something that can be done to help you, the government is always on about helping people get
off benefits so hopefully there will be something that can be done. Have you tried Learn Direct - they help with education costs.

Learn direct offer the ALG (adult learning grant). I've looking into that as I was told that I could get it to help me pay for my course. Not a chance, the
government pay the ALG but they won't pay it to people they're already paying benefits to.

There may well be funding somewhere for you, several women who work in our playgroup/school received funding for their NVQ courses, it is just a matter of
finding it! Hopefully the jobcentre will have some advice and help for you, I do hope so,. good luck.

I opened an Individual Learning Account this year and I got £200 towards a course (there's a whole list of things). I did Sage Accounting and it
didn't cost me anything. Might be worth looking into it to see if you qualify. I got the money because I was on a low income. Google ILA and have a look
at their site.

Amanda please let me know how you get on, iv been put on incapacty benefit for a while and i want to look into doing a child psychology home study course, if i
carnt work i might as well be studying right? but being on beneifts i just carnt afford it, i would be greatful if you could let me know what the job center
says.
Its really upsetting isnt it, the government say they want erveryone back to work but they are doing nothing to help it makes me so mad, im lucky as i have the diplomas i need to get a job again but why should people take just any job when they are willing to study to gain a profession or a trade and the only thing thats stopping them is the cost grrrrr lol ok rant over Nicxx |

You may be able to obtain funding through the Learning and Skills Council. It may well be in the form of a loan to be
repaid when you start working (a bit like a Student Loan) or an Adult Learning Grant. If you go to the LSC website and then click on your local area on the
map it will give you more information.

I only get incap benefits and course i wanted to go on Design and Textiles i couldnt get any hel[ but if i was on Income support or jobseekers allowance i
would
Through the job centre i got on the equals 1 computer course free but to do the ECDL course i had to pay,but through the job centre they got in touch with North Somerset Council who funded me to do ECDL course as they knew i could get a job after i finished the course so they were happy to fund me But for Design n Textiles course or Photography course they wouldnt fund me as they said they knew i wouldnt get a job after the course was finished Colin is on Incap Benefits and is getting funding to do a health and safety course on a re train to get back to work basis So i do hope you will be lucky in finding someone to fund you to do the course and eventually get back to work when your doc gives you the ok Wendy xx |

I went to the job centre, saw a really nice lady, she was very sympathetic with the situation but the big answer was a definate no, sorry can't help. Then
she asked what course I wanted to do and when I said Floristry I got an even bigger NO. Looks like they don't see that as a career move. She suggested
trying to get a careers loan from the bank, but I have a big problem with that as I'm one of the very few who can't get credit or loans. All I can do
now it go to the college on enrolment day and speak to the finance people to see if they can sort a longer DD out for me. I'll also have to speak to the
tutors to see if there'd be a problem if I couldn't afford the flowers one week would I have to miss it or could I still attend and just watch the
others.
I'll check out the couple of websites suggested as well. Amanda |

Does your local college offer a Passport to Learning?

Its so annoying Amanda. Incapacity Benefit counts for nothing. the only benefits that are accepted seems to be Income Support (IS) and Council Tax Benefit. I
had the same problem when I thought about going to college, but the cost stopped me and now I'm pleased it did cos I couldn't have finished the course.
The stupid thing is that if you're on IS you can get discounted everything (just about), but the ones who need help like you trying to better yourself, just don't get it. Its even worse when you are just over the borderline cut off for IS. Because you have to pay for everything in full, you need any help you can get, but you can't because IS is the golden ticket to any sort of assistance. I feel for you. I really do. Been there. Its an awful situation. Sorry didn't mean to rant. Hope you can get something sorted out at the JC. Got everything crossed for you. Lov Jill x |
