Sorry, but what I don't understand is how it makes any difference. They are merely items pupils sit at during a school day. Surely what is being taught, and how, is the important thing, and that has changed beyond all comprehension. Many young people today don't know anywhere near what most of us knew at a similar age so it mustn't be as effective or full as that was. Let's start focusing on subject material and content and not what a child sits at whilst at school. Many lessons I learnt at school in the summer were taught sitting on the grass outside because it was nicer for us not to be in a hot stuffy building. I still learnt what was being taught, and very well too because it was a pleasanter environment.
