Always have done, & our children all do the same with their families. And definitely with no T.V. or toys - we've always had the very important family natter around the table, young & old , & no one has ever resented it, I'm glad to say.
However now there are only the two off us here, if there's recorded craft or light TV to watch early evening, DH & I will occasionally eat more casually, sitting on the sofa, but not unless it's just pizza or pasta to eat with just a fork etc. If I happen to be alone I'm afraid it's usually a snack in front of the computer!  If the Grandchildren are here, we still have the family get-together around the table.

With busy lives for everyone, we've always valued our together catch-up time, nattering around the table...old style I suppose
