In 1986 I had a massive ear-infection for about 3 weeks. I was working in the Gambia (West Africa) and had had a swim in a pool, that probably was not all that clean, although it looked like it at the time.

First I had ear pain in my left ear for a week. Then I had ear-pain in my right ear for a week. Then it sort of doubled up on me, and I had ear-pain in both my ears for a week, and I was quite deaf.
And no, I did not go to any African doctor. So I did not have any antibiotics. Perhaps stupid, but I was not very wise when I was 19 years old.
I swam in the very salty Atlantic as much as I could, and it seems that is what saved me in the end. It was horribly painful at the time though, and I also had very "weird" conversations with people, due to my not hearing properly, LOL.
But my hearing did get back though, with no bad side effects.

Perhaps you could flush your ears with salty water, as well as taking antibiotics....you know with that orange rubber balloon like thingy. and a bottle of NaCl, salt...well, it worked for me anyway....the salty Atlantic water that is.

Good Luck!
