I've been mulling this over for a few days now and I just can't remember. Both my sister and I "adopted" some of Mum's singles, still have them.

I remember being given my first tape recorder, one of those one-speaker jobs with big buttons. Inherited some tapes with that, mostly early-70s pop compilations and some country music. I do remember the first cassette I bought, in the mid-70s in Woolies - a Disney Christmas tape. Still have it and it still works. Goodness knows how, it's was played and rewound so many times!

It is possible (embarassingly enough) the first single I bought was something by Shakin Stevens. I started a Saturday job in a local cafe when I was 11 years old, at the princely rate of 60p per hour. So it'd fit in time-wise, I remember singles in Woolies being 99p.

Made me feel ancient when my 11 year old nephew looked totally confused and asked, "What's a single?" (I'm 44.)
