Never got a detention or lines of any sort and there was no cane at my secondary school (even before the ban) but I did get in trouble once in my 6 years there.
Two friends and I went out at lunchtime (you needed a pass and we didn't have one) and got caught by a couple of prefects as we climbed back through a gap in the railings - we were sent to our respective Heads of house - one friend got lines the other got detention and I got................ "It's not like you, don't do it again" and that was it.
They later abolished prefects (partly because nobody wanted the job) and trusted us to be more responsible and in the main it worked.

If we talked in class, did something wrong etc. we were given cautions (blue slip worth either 1,2 or 3 points) and these were deducted from our House points (which were earned for good work and good behaviour) and that mattered more because there was fierce competition to be top house. I never got a caution which was a miracle because I was always a talker.
