I am sorry to hear this too and think you should fight it all the way. Welfare rights officers are really brilliant, as are specialist agencies set up to deal with your son's condition (these are usuallly registered charities) and often have a welfare rights specialist. I think a letter from your MP might help too. I used to work for the DSS/Benefits Agency and remember that MPs letters often worked miracles.

When I worked at the Benefits Agency I remember sometimes people used to report other people, often it was malicious, and often happened after a fall out with a family member, neighbour or friend. My advice to anyone claiming benefits is to keep that information to yourself as people rarely understand the issues and often get jealous/ or on a 'high-horse'.

Alison makes a lot of good points regarding the way government etc view disability and benefits. It is now getting harder for peple to claim beneifts and keep them. Many official organisations and doctors fail to understand that a disability is for life, it is not going to get much better and ok, some people might be able to work a few hours a week for therapeutic value and top up thier income but their main source of income must always be disability benefits.
