I'm not very good either, but I was shown this way and it works for me.
I cut the insert, fold and then try it pushed into the card to make sure it doesn't show. An obvious step I kept forgetting
Then I put some DS near the back fold of the card (it isn't critical). Now, holding the insert at an upwards angle so it doesn't stick to the tape, present it to the fold of the card with the back page of the card facing towards you. When the insert is close to the fold, straight and centred, slowly lay it down onto the card. It will catch onto the tape.
It is my personal preference, but I now like to take an inch or so of DS, lay it on the front page of the card near the crease and fold it closed so the insert is held on both pages.
For some reason, my brads are always too close to the edges to be covered up by an insert so now I don't worry about them. Any attempt I make to cover them up only looks worse than the back of a brad. The only exception is when I make a card for a young child when I stick a circle of card over them.
