I have had varifocals for years and have no problem. I do not need them all the time as my sight is good enough without except for closework, and watching tv is greatly improved! I wear them for driving at night, and have a pair with polaroid lenses for daytime driving - brilliant, the polaroid reduces all the glare and makes driving a real pleasure.
I suspect problems with them might mean the prescription on one or other part of the lens is not quite correct; you should not have to tilt your head or hold the object at a distance. They are set for normal use.
I tried bifocals but found the sudden lens change too irritating, and much prefer the graduation on the varifocals.
