As I said earlier, British Gas salesperson was VERY rude to me just after I split from them and was demanding payment of my last bill with them ... and i had only just received the last bill. Told her I would pay in due course.

So, it probably was British Gas and I think your hubby may be right. At least make them wait for the last payment now. Offer to pay them at £5 a month by standing order if they don't apologise. They then could not take you to court for non-payment or not intending to pay and of course, if you have new supplier then no threat of cut off.

Perhaps make a complaint to the Energy Ombudsman in the meantime.
