Ah, now - Muffin the Mule! That brings back memories. I had a Muffin the Mule string puppet, which I had for years!

I too remember the wool winding - so boring!

Yes - we also had those small hessian rugs made out of material (in our case, it was material from my grandfather's old trousers - lol!). The rugs stood outside each door in the hall. I don't think fitted carpets were even thought of in those days. Certainly, there was not underlay - we had a large piece of carpet with newspaper underneath and, in the winter, the wind would blow up from the cellar and make the carpet go up into bulges - spooky!

Oh, the good old days ...
