Well, I'm the one who answers most of these and it has got me a bit too. My first thought would be to press ctrl, alt and del together and see what's running in task manager then to do a system restore back a day or two to when you didn't have this happening. It might be worth googling memtest and seeing if it picks up a RAM problem that's causing a program to stay in the memory after you've closed it. I'd run a virus scan too. Any unexplained activity like this could well be that kind of problem.
