Probably a quartz halogen type ... have a nosey around all the lamps in your supermarket. A bit more pricey but we fitted one (rated about 75w) as the daylight lamps, as you point out, are pretty pathetic in terms of light output.

Now the current legistlation on lamps must have been made by MEN. The original tungsten filament lamps gave a good light output (not talking about the colour balance) but produced heat also. During approx 65 - 75% of the year in northern europe this doesn't matter. The heat produced by lamps can be offset against the fact that less energy is taken to heat the house.

Another lamp type is slowly coming onto the market ... LED lamps (made up of a number of LEDs in a lamp casing). Now these are good! Keep an eye out for them as the availability goes up (and hopefully prices fall). They should have a good length of life, good brightness AND low energy usage. Way to go!!! Hubby has a portable lamp (almost a torch) with bank of 48 LEDs in a strip and wow, it IS bright. I have seen a couple of light boxes with these in and I am just waiting for an "affordable" one to come out (under £30 for approx A4 size is what I would call affordable).
