I was talking about this with some friends a couple of days ago, strangely enough I did a fair few detentions when I was at school
and we were talking about the various detentions we did. Quite often we had to write out a page/pages from the dictionary, we were given the start page when we arrived for detetion. We did have one teacher, Mrs Bruckshaw ( that was how she spelled her name) and she never kept us in after school, but gave us an essay to write at home. It had to be 2 sides of an A4 sheet and she gave you the topic, her favourites were

Obviously this was before computers and google, so needed a trip to the reference library. When it was handed in the next day, she read it thoroughly and if it was padded out with rubbish, she just tore it up and told you to do it again. Her reputation was well known in the school so we all tried not to get detention. I think she only ever gave me one detention, I got the matchstick.
What detentions were given out at your schools? Maybe everyone else was either better behaved than I was, or luckier and got away with things.
