??How to colour feathers |

|
I have not been able to match some feathers for some of my cards and wondered if anyone could tell me how you colour them?

I know the inking pads work with ribbon, but haven't tried feathers. Worth a try I would think. Eileen

Also worth a try, I'd have thought, is food dye.Why not paint a sample featherI with it and let it dry? I haven't tried this myself, it's just an
idea, but it might work.

not sure but I would have thought ANYTHING even slightly damp would make the feathers clog together. How about a slight dusting of chalk?
you could perhaps give AN EXTREMELY QUICK SPRAY with hair lacquer to seal it afterwards. Perhaps the colour would stay without? Jacqui x

I know that I'm going to sound like a numpty but could they be stood in the dye and allowed to soak up the colour. A bit like we used to do with blotting
paper and ink when in school

I have had a little play for you with a cheap feather - first one I layed my hands on but I think it shows you can do it. the feather was bright orange and I coloured part of it with red wine PETAL DUST from my cake decorating kit. You won't get the main stem to change colour but the feather will. I layed the the feather on a piece of paper, and using large flat brush, took little of the dust out of the pot and put it in the lid, dabbed my brush into the powder/dust and then gradually worked the colour into the feather. Have only done half the feather so you can see the "before and after".

Many thanks ladies, I did try cake colour but it ran off and didn't colour, wondered if like carnations you stand the stem in die the flower takes on the
colour but think feathers have a natural coating to stop water penatrating, there must be a special way just thought that with easter cards needed soon I could
colour them specialy for my grandchildren most of the feathers you buy are strong colours or white.
Must get on with ironing now and try and think up another way to colour them. Lesley |

sounds a good idea Mags - I have several feathers that are colours I'm not keen on - and already use the cake colour powder for marzipan fruits etc - so
yippee will have a play with that - thank you for the idea!

if you're making Easter cards, won't they be yellow feathers? Hobbycraft do lots of kiddies easter kits, and bags of yelloe
feathers just for the occasion xx

joanna sheen wrote: the sparkly powders aren't so good - but once you have got a plain dust on you can brush a sparkly one over the top - and don't forget if you
haven't got the exact colour - you can mix dusts together to create the colour you want.
