I was called to a meeting at work with my line manager yesterday and later received a letter "inviting" me to a disciplinary hearing to discuss my "personal hygiene." As a fellow sufferer for the last 18 years I know how much pain you can be in and how little control you can have over "bodily functions". They should be thankful that it's only wind!!! Can you get a letter from your doctor to advise them of your condition. I am absolutely gob-smacked that they are even considering this as something to hold a disciplinary hearing over. How can they hold a disciplinary hearing unless you've already had warnings about this issue? Go to your gp and get a letter as back up. Take a union rep with you (if you have one or are in the union) but if not, you are entitled to have someone else (ie a work colleague you can trust) with you. Get them to make notes or make notes yourself, you are allowed. Make a list of questions you may want to ask as when you are under pressure things you have previously thought about and want to ask usually fly out the window. Please remember, you have rights so, in situations like this, use them. Will be thinking about you and hope everything comes to a satisfactory conclusion (for you that is ) Anne x

Posts: 550 (08/03/2008 15:25:18) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Hi, I don't know what type of organisation you work for but if I were you, I would seek union assistance or visit Citizens Advice bureau/legal advice to make sure you have the full knowledge of your rights. I would also ask that every meeting you have is fully documented with formal minutes, if you don't get them from your manager, do your own summary of the meeting (be objective) and send it to them to seek confirmation of the points they raise (in other words create a cover your *** file). There will surely be legislation which protects you against discrimation on the basis of a medical condition. Check full details of your staff handbook or equivalent, all Companies have to follow documented procedure when going down a disciplinary route and you have to be given details of these in order for them to fully comply. All of this knowledge will allow you to take some control especially if they are being unreasonable. It is also likely that if the Company is following a formal disciplinary process you have the right to bring a independant representative to meetings who cannot take part but can be with you to provide support (this can also make managers very careful about what they say). You would be very surprise at how quickly some Managers back off when they discover the member of staff fully knows their legal rights especially under discrimation and medical grounds - no Comapny wants to have to defend a constructive dismissal case if they can avoid it. Posts: 1723 (08/03/2008 15:26:57) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	having suffered with ibs for the last 21 years i know how bad it can get, your doctor will give you a statement with the details of your condition and the fact that stress is a trigger for bouts as well as things you eat, the last thing you need is a meeting 'disciplinary' or otherwise, i would request a closed meeting with the head of personnel and produce the letter for her to read. issues like this are personal not work related so why should you have to disclose it to more people than is absolutely necessary. in this day and age medical matters such as this should be handled with understanding and producing a letter from you gp will at least ensure that if you decide to leave because of it (or they dont leave you a choice) then you have grounds for unfair dismissal or conductive dismissal if you decide to go, as you felt they left you no choice. you do have rights, and the right to not have this become public knowledge at work is one of them! please take care and stand up for your rights, chell x ps i did go through a phase where i had to leave work early quite a bit and decided that only the people that needed to know should be told. which i did in a requested closed meeting with personnel. i have had lots of understanding and leeway since, which has made the stress much less, so less bouts.

It is disgraceful and your managers are obviously very ignorant and pretty stupid if they are classing a medical condition over which you have no control whatsoever as 'personal hygiene' UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
